Baseball Takes 3-2 Win to Open Series with Georgetown

Musketeers and Hoyas return to Hayden Field at 1:00 p.m. on Friday
CINCINNATI -Â Xavier baseball opened up the final series of the regular season with a win, taking game one with Georgetown, 3-2. Xavier moved to 34-20 overall, the most wins in a season since going 34-27 in 2017, and 14-5 in BIG EAST play, clinching at least the No. 2 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament.
Georgetown took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run in the second and held the lead into the fifth inning. In the bottom of the fifth, Alex Helmin hit a one-out single, then scored on a RBI double from Grant Stephenson to tie the game at 1-1. Jack Housinger hit an RBI single to bring Stephenson home, putting the Musketeers in front, 2-1.
The Hoyas tied it up a 2-2 in the top of sixth with a solo home run, and the tie held into the seventh, where Grant Stephenson lead off with a walk, moved to second on a sac bunt from Jack Housinger and third on a wild pitch. With one out, Andrew Walker put the ball into play to bring in Stephenson for the winning run, 3-2.
Brant Alazaus went 7.1 innings in the start, allowing just two runs on the way to his eighth win of the season, and Justin Loer held the Hoyas scoreless for the final 1.2 innings, picking up his fifth save of the season.
The Musketeers and the Hoyas return to Hayden Field on Friday, May 19, with game two set for a 1:00 p.m. start.
