Xavier hits 30-win mark for second-straight season
OMAHA, Neb. - Xavier baseball used a 3-1 win in the series finale at Creighton to wrap up a three-game sweep of the Bluejays on Sunday at Charles Schwab Field. Xavier moved to 30-17 overall and 11-4 in BIG EAST play with the win. Xavier has now hit 30 wins for a second-straight season, marking the first time the Musketeers have had back-to-back 30-win seasons since 2016-17.
Xavier took the 1-0 lead in the third after Jack Housinger and Matthew DePrey took back-to-back walks to put two runners on for Andrew Walker, who singled to right to bring in Housinger.Â
The Musketeers added a second run on a solo shot from Jared Cushing in the fourth, taking the 2-0 lead into the seventh. Jack Housinger led off the seventh with a double, then came home on Andrew Walker's second RBI single of the day to make it a 3-0 Xavier lead.
The Bluejays got a run across in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead back to 3-1, but Justin Loer struck out four batters in the final two innings to keep Creighton off the board the rest of the way.
Luke Hoskins made the start on the mound, going 5.2 scoreless innings, combining with Clay Schwaner and Justin Loer to limit the Bluejays to one run while collecting nine strikeouts. Through the three-game series, Xavier's pitchers limited Creighton to just two earned runs, finishing the weekend with a team ERA of 0.67. The Musketeers combined for 32 strikeouts while giving up just two walks, and held the Bluejays to a .152 batting average.
The sweep of the Bluejays marks the first time Xavier has swept Creighton in a three-game regular season series since joining the BIG EAST. Xavier also moves in front in all-time head-to-head match-ups with the Jays, now leading 19-18 in the series that dates back to 1984.
Next up, Xavier returns to Cincinnati for a pair of midweek games, starting with a trip across town to face UC on Tuesday, May 9, set for a 6:00 p.m. start at UC Baseball Stadium. Xavier then returns to Hayden Field on Wednesday, May 10, hosting Indiana, with a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
