Pair are first Musketeers to take part in doubles at the national championships
WACO, Texas - Abby Nugent and Clara Owen became the first Xavier women's tennis players to compete in the doubles at the NCAA Individual Championships on Wednesday at Baylor University in Waco, Texas.
The pair took on Carson Tanguilig and Susanna Maltby from North Carolina in the Round of 32. After falling behind 2-0 in the first set, the Xavier pair won three straight games to take a 3-2 lead before UNC's pair battled back to take the first set, 6-3.
In the second set, Owen and Nugent took the first game, and UNC tied it up at 1-1, Xavier responded by taking three straight games to take a 4-1 lead. UNC would come back to tie it up at 4-4 before the Musketeers took the final two games to take set two, 6-4.
In the tiebreaker, the Musketeers fell, setting the final score at 6-3, 4-6, 10-2 in favor of North Carolina.
