Baseball Falls at No. 9 Clemson in Season Opener

Musketeers and Tigers play game two of three on Saturday at 2 PM
CLEMSON, S.C. - Xavier baseball dropped the 2024 season opener at No. 9 Clemson, falling, 14-3, to the Tigers on Friday evening at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Xavier took a 2-0 lead in the first inning after getting the first four batters aboard, with Garrett Schultz scoring on a passed ball and Matthew DePrey coming home on a sac fly from Connor Misch.
The Tigers responded with a seven-run bottom of the frame, and added runs in the third and fourth to take a 12-2 lead. After Clemson stretched the lead to ten, Xavier's defense didn't allow another Tiger hit until the eighth, when Clemson added a pair of runs to the lead. The Musketeers drove another run across in the top of the ninth, with Aedan Anderson scoring on a Grant Stephenson single to set the final score at 14-3.
The three-game series continues on Saturday, with game two set to begin at 2:00 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.

- Terry Murray entered in the third, going 2.0 innings, allowing five runs on four hits, walking three and striking out two.
- Eli Bridenthal came in the fifth, not allowing a hit or a run in 2.0 innings of work. He finished with two strikeouts to one walk.
- Ashton Chronister pitched the seventh inning, going 1.0 scoreless inning in his collegiate debut, not allowing a hit or a walk and picking up a strikeout.
- Eric Podgorny entered for the eight inning, allowing tow runs on one hit and a pair of walks in 0.1 inning.
- Jack Niedringhaus entered with one out and the bases loaded in the eighth, getting the Musketeers out of the inning with a 6-4-3 double play.
