Hammond Homers Twice as Xavier Falls in Game Two at No. 9 Clemson

Nolan Hughes strikes out six in first start as a Musketeer
CLEMSON, S.C. - Musketeer hitters knocked in three home runs while the pitching staff collected 10 strikeouts, but Xavier fell in game two at No. 9 Clemson, 8-3, on Saturday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Xavier struck first for the second day in the row, taking a 1-0 lead in the second on a solo home run from Luke Hammond. The Musketeers took the lead into the fourth when a four-run frame put the Tigers in front.
In the top of the fifth, Hammond hit his second homer of the day to cut the lead to 4-2, but the Tigers added runs in the fifth and sixth to take an 8-2 lead into the seventh. Aedan Anderson added a run for the Musketeers on a solo shot in the seventh, setting the final score at 8-3 in favor of Clemson.
The three-game series wraps up on Sunday, set for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch on ACC Network Extra.

AT THE PLATE
- Luke Hammond finished 2-4 with two solo home runs, collecting two RBI and scoring two runs. His second-inning homer was his first as a Musketeer.
- Aedan Anderson hit a solo home run in the seventh inning, finishing 1-1 at the plate with an RBI and run scored.
- Tyler DeMartino also finished with a hit.
- Garrett Schultz finished with two of Xavier's four walks on the day. Matthew DePrey and Matt McCormick each had a walk as well.

- Nolan Hughes went 3.1 innings in his first start as a Musketeer, allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits, striking out six and walking five.
- Logan Schmidt entered for with one on and one out in the fourth, going 2.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts.
- Connor Bailey entered for the final out of the sixth, allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts in 0.2 innings.
- Tyler Sausville came in with one on and one out in the seventh and went the final 1.2 innings, not allowing a run and giving up just one hit.
