Baseball Takes 9-5 Win in Game One at Lipscomb

DeMartino, Hendrickson and McCormick each hit first home run of the season
Xavier struck first, taking a two-run lead in the first after Matthew DePrey got aboard with a single and moved to second on a single from Tyler DeMartino. Both came home on a single from Hayden Christiansen.
The Musketeers extended the lead to 5-0 in the third when DeMartino hit a two-run homer, also bringing in DePrey who led the inning off with a double. Jared Cushing got on with a single and Christiansen hit another RBI singles to bring Cushing home.
The Bisons scored in the next four innings, but Xavier added runs in each of those frames to maintain at least a three-run lead. In the fourth, DePrey picked up an RBI on a ground ball, scoring Garrett Schultz who reach on an error. Christiansen drove in another RBI in the fifth with a double, bringing in DeMartino who led off the inning with a single. Carter Hendrickson hit a solo home run to lead off the sixth to give the Musketeers eight runs.
Xavier took the 9-5 advantage into the ninth when a solo home run from Matt McCormick set the final score at 9-5 in favor of the Musketeers.
Game two with the Bisons is set for Saturday, Feb. 24, with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET.
- Hayden Christiansen matched his career-high with four RBI after going 3-of-4 at the plate with a double.
- Tyler DeMartino matched his career-high with a four-hit day (4-of-5) including his first home run of the season. He finished with two RBI and score a team-high three runs.
- Matthew DePrey went 2-of-4 at the plate with a double, scoring a pair of runs and driving in an RBI.
- Carter Hendrickson hit his first home run of the season in the sixth, to finish with an RBI and run scored.
- Matt McCormick's ninth inning home run was his first of the season, giving him and RBI and a run scored.
- Jared Cushing and Garrett Schultz each scored a run as well.
- Luke Hoskins made the start, going 6.0 innings with five runs allowed on seven hits, finishing with one strikeout and no walks issued. Hoskins picked up the win to move to 1-1 on the season.
- Jake Hooker entered for the seventh inning, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. He finished with two strikeouts and didn't allow a walk.
- Alex Vera pitched the final 1.1 innings, not allowing a run and giving up just two hits and striking out one.
- Xavier's pitching staff did not issue a walk on the day.
