Musketeers Pitching Staff Combines for 12 Ks in Win at No. 2 LSU

Xavier takes the 2-1 win in the series finale in Baton Rouge
BATON ROUGE, La. -  Xavier's pitching staff combined for a season-high matching 12 strikeouts, led by seven for Nick Boyle, on the way to the 2-1 win over No. 2 LSU at Alex Box Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Musketeers moved to 8-8 with the win and 1-2 in the weekend series, ending a nine-game win streak for the defending champs, who moved to 14-2.Â
The game was scoreless into the fourth inning, when the Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the frame. Xavier responded in the next half of the inning, with Jake Lambdin leading off the fifth with a walk, moving to second after Carter Hendrickson reached on an error and moving to third on a wild pitch. Hayden Christiansen hit a ground ball to the right side with one out, driving in Lambdin to tie the game at 1-1.
Nick Boyle had a career-high seven strikeouts, allowing only four hits in 5.0 innings, and not allowing an earned run, to keep the game tied headed into the sixth.
The Musketeers got the lead-off batter aboard again in the sixth, with Aedan Anderson getting on with a walk, moving to second on an error and advancing to third on a sac bunt from Matthew DePrey. Jared Cushing hit an RBI single to center field to drive in the run and put the Musketeers in front, 2-1.Â
Jonathan Kelly, Alex Vera and Jake Hooker came out of the bullpen and combined to limit LSU to just one hit the rest of the way, collecting five strikeouts and not allowing a walk to keep help the Tigers off the board on the way to the 2-1 win.
Xavier travels to Wright State on Tuesday, March 12, set to face the Raiders at 3:00 p.m.

- Nick Boyle made the start, going 5.0 innings with one run allowed, unearned, on four hits. He topped his career-high of six strikeouts, set last Sunday at Florida Gulf Coast, finishing with seven Ks while only walking a pair. Boyle picked up the win to move to 2-0 on the season.
- Jonathan Kelly came in with one on and no outs in the sixth, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out a pair.
- Alex Vera entered with two outs and a runner on first in the seventh, picking up the final out of the inning with a flyball on the only batter he faced in his 0.1 inning of work.
- Jake Hooker pitched the final 2.0 innings, not allowing a hit or giving up a walk to keep the Tigers scoreless, striking out three along the way. Hooker picked up the save, his first of the season.
- Xavier's staff combined for a season-high match 12 strikeouts, also set in the win over FGCU on 3/2. Xavier pitchers held the Tigers to just five hits, a season-low for the Musketeers.
- LSU's one run scored was a season low for the Tigers.
