CINCINNATI - Xavier baseball fell in the series opener against Creighton, 10-8, in a game that stretched over two days due to a weather delay. Xavier moved to 15-18 on the season and 1-3 in BIG EAST play.

Xavier took the early 1-0 lead on a solo home run from Hayden Christiansen in the bottom of the first, taking the one-run advantage into the third. A four-run frame from the Bluejays in the top of three put Creighton in front 4-1.

In the bottom of the third, Xavier responded with a pair of runs on back-to-back solo homers from Jake Lambdin and Luke Hammond to cut the Creighton advantage to 4-3.

CU added two more runs to the lead in the fourth, 6-3. In the bottom of the inning, Matthew DePrey was hit by a pitch, stole second and moved to third on a ground out. Carter Hendrickson hit a bunt single to the left side of the infield to drive in a run, cutting the lead back to two, 6-4.

In the bottom of the sixth, Aedan Anderson used a solo shot to pull the Musketeers back within one, 6-5, but the Bluejays responded with a solo home run in the next frame to extend the lead back to two, 7-5.

The 7-5 score held into the top of the seventh when the game entered a weather delay and was postponed until Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. When the game restarted, the Bluejays added three more runs in the seventh to take a 10-5 lead.

Xavier added a run in the seventh, after Matt McCormick reached on a error and Christiansen and Jared Cushing each reached on a walk. DePrey reached on a fielder's choice to bring in McCormick.

Another solo home run from Hammond in the eighth pulled Xavier within 10-8. In the ninth, DePrey hit a two-out double, then scored on a single from Tyler Stack. Hendrickson singled and Anderson walked to load the bases, but the Musketeers were unable to drive another run across in the inning, setting the final score at 10-8.

Game two with Creighton is set to follow the conclusion of game one on Saturday afternoon.

AT THE PLATE

Luke Hammond went 2-of-5 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored after hitting two solo home runs, giving him nine for the season.
Hayden Christiansen hit his sixth home run of the season, finishing 1-of-3 with two walks.
Jake Lambdin finished 2-of-5 with an RBI and run scored after hitting his first collegiate home run.
Aedan Anderson went 1-of-4 with a walk, hitting his eighth home run of the season to finish with an RBI and a run scored.
Carter Hendrickson went 2-of-5, driving in an RBI.
Matthew DePrey finished with an RBI and two runs scored
Tyler Stack went 1-of-1, driving in an RBI with a single in the ninth.

ON THE MOUND

Nick Boyle made the start, going 2.2 innings, allowing four runs on three hits, finishing with three strikeouts and three walks.
Alex Vera entered with two on and two outs in the third, going 2.1 innings. He allowed two runs on four hits, giving up one walk.
Connor Bailey entered for the sixth, going 1.1 innings before the game was postponed due to weather. He allowed to runs on two hits with two strikeouts.
Tyler Sausville was on the mound when the game restarted on Saturday, with one on and one out in the seventh. He went the rest of the way, finishing with two earned runs allowed on three hits in 2.2 innings of work. He had two strikeouts to two walks.
