McCormick hits team-high matching 13th home run in 6-3 loss to Red Storm

CINCINNATI - Xavier baseball fell in the series finale against St. John's, 6-3, on Sunday afternoon at Hayden Field. The Musketeers finished the three-game series with the Red Storm at 1-2, moving to 22-22 overall and 6-6 in BIG EAST play.

A solo home run from Matt McCormick in the second inning got the scoring started, and the Musketeers made it a 2-0 lead headed to the third after an RBI single from Jake Lambdin drove in Matthew DePrey, who reached on a fielder's choice.

St. John's scored runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to move in front, leading 6-2 into the eighth inning.

In the bottom of the eighth, Jared Cushing led off with a single, and McCormick got on with a walk, Cushing moved to third on a ground ball from. Hayden Christiansen and score on a fielders choice from Connor Misch to cut the lead to 6-3.

In the ninth, a two-out single from Luke Hammond and a double from Aedan Anderson brought the tying run the plate, but the Musketeers were unable to drive another run across, setting the final score at 6-3.

Xavier will be back in action on Friday, May 3, at Butler, the first of three games against the Bulldogs in Indianapolis.

AT THE PLATE

Matt McCormick (1-3, 1 BB) finished with an RBI and a run scored hitting his team-high matching 13th home run of the season.
Jake Lambdin (1-4) drove in an RBI with a second-inning single.
Connor Misch finished with a walk and an RBI after driving in Cushing in the eighth inning on a fielder's choice.
Matthew DePrey finished with a walk and a run scored.
Jared Cushing (1-4) finished with a run scored after getting on with an eighth-inning single.
Luke Hammond finished with a pair of hits (2-5).

ON THE MOUND

Luke Hoskins made the start, going 3.2 innings, allowing four runs, two earned, on six hits. He finished with two strikeouts to one hit.
Alex Vera entered with two on and two outs in the fourth, going 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits, striking out one.
Nolan Hughes made his second appearance of the series, coming out of the bullpen for the seventh inning. Hughes went 2.0 innings, not allowing a run or a hit, walking one and striking out three.
Jake Lambdin slid from short to the mound for the ninth, allowing two hits and striking out a pair in a scorelesss 1.0 inning of work.
