Baseball Opens BIG EAST Play with 9-5 Win at UConn

Luke Hoskins goes a career-long 8.0 innings in start
STORRS, Conn. - Two big innings at the plate and a career-long outing from starter Luke Hoskins powered Xavier baseball to a 9-1 win in the BIG EAST opener at UConn on Friday afternoon. The Musketeers move to 15-14 overall and is 1-0 in conference action.
The Musketeers started out the game with singles from Luke Hammond, Connor Misch and Matt McCormick, with McCormick driving in Hammond for the 1-0 lead. Hayden Christiansen drove in Misch with a sac fly make it a 2-0 Xavier lead. A single from Matthew DePrey put runners on the corners for Aedan Anderson, who tripled to right to drive in McCormick and DePrey, making it a 4-0 lead. The Musketeers made it a 5-0 lead after the top of the first after Anderson scored on a ground out from Jared Cushing.
Xavier added four more runs in the in the third, with walks from DePrey and Anderson putting two on with two out for Cushing, who singled to center to drive in DePrey. Tyler Stack followed Cushing, clearing the bases with his first collegiate home run, a three-run shot to put the Musketeers ahead 9-0.
Luke Hoskins held the Huskies scoreless into the eighth, when a solo home run got UConn on the board at 9-1. The eight-run lead held into the bottom of the ninth when the Connecticut bats heated up, scoring four runs before the Musketeer bullpen closed the door, setting the final score at 9-5.
The series with the Huskies continues on Saturday, April 7, with game two set for a 2:05 PM start.

- Jack Niedringhaus entered from the bullpen to start the ninth, going 0.2 innings, allowing four runs on three hits, finishing with a strikeout and two walks.
- Matthew Aukerman entered with one on and two out in the ninth, facing one batter who was hit by a pitch.
- Alex Vera entered with two on and two outs in the ninth, picking up the final out and earning the save, his third of the season.
