The Hoyas took a 2-0 lead in the first two innings before the Musketeers got on the board in the third on a solo home run from Grant Stephenson. GU responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to lead 4-1.
Xavier got the first two aboard in the fourth, with Jared Cushing being hit by a pitch and Matt McCormick taking a walk. Cushing stole third, then came home on a single from Carter Hendrickson. McCormick, who moved to third on Hendrickson's single, scored on an error to cut it to 4-3.
The Hoyas added runs in the fifth and seventh innings, but the Musketeers scored in the final six frames to chip away to the lead. In the sixth, Connor Misch led off with a single, and walks for Matthew DePrey and Luke Hammond loaded the bases for Aedan Anderson, who took the third walk of the inning to drive in a run.
In the seventh, Cushing led off with a single and came home on a double from Hendrickson. In the eighth, Hammond singled and Anderson walked, and both advanced on a wild pitch to put two runners in scoring position for Cushing. The second baseman sent a single up the middle to bring both runners in, tying the game a 7-7.
With the game tied in the ninth, McCormick hit a lead-off home run to give the Musketeers their first lead of the game, and Misch followed with a solo shot of his own to make it a two-run Xavier lead, setting the final score at 9-7.
