Zach Freemantle and Dailyn Swain hit double figures as Musketeers give Golden Eagles first BIG EAST loss
MILWAUKEE - Xavier held off a late run from No. 7 Marquette, taking a 59-57 win over the Golden Eagles at Fiserv Forum on Saturday afternoon.
Xavier improves to 12-7 overall and 4-4 BIG EAST, while Marquette moves to 15-3 overall and 6-1 in BIG EAST play.
Xavier remains on the road for its next match-up, traveling to New York to face St. John's on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at Madison Square Garden. The Musketeers and the Red Storm get underway 7 p.m. on FS1.

NOTABLE
- Xavier recorded its first win over an AP top 10 team since beating No. 2 UConn 83-73 on Dec. 31, 2022 at Cintas Center. XU's last win over an AP Top 10 team on the road was its 74-62 win at No. 10 Seton Hall on Feb. 1, 2020.
- Xavier scored the opening basket and didn't trail in the first half, building the lead out to double figures in the final minutes of the half to take an 11-point lead into halftime, 35-24. The 11-point deficit was Marquette's largest halftime deficit this season. Zach Freemantle led all scorers in the first half with 10 points.
- Xavier opened the second half on a 10-2 run to take a 19-point lead, 45-26, five minutes in to the second half. The 19-point deficit is the largest Marquette has faced this season .
- Marquette responded with an 11-2 run to pull within 10, but the Musketeers maintained a double-figure lead going into the final six minutes of the game. The Golden Eagles outscored the Musketeers 16-8 over the final five minutes to pull within two, but Xavier's defense prevented MU from getting shot off in the final seconds of the game to set the final score at 59-57 in favor of the Musketeers. Xavier never trailed.
- Zach Freemantle led the Musketeers with 14 points after scoring 10 in the first half, and grabbed 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season.
- Dailyn Swain finished with 12 points after scoring eight in the second half and finished with nine boards.
- Dayvion McKnight scored nine points and dished out a team-high five assists.
- Marcus Foster finished with nine points and eight rebounds.
- The Musketeers finished shooting 40.4 percent (23-57) from the floor after connecting on 50 percent of their first half shots (14-28). The Golden Eagles shot 37.1 percent (23-62) from the floor overall.
- The Golden Eagles had a 39-37 advantage on the boards, with a 12-8 advantage on the offensive glass.
- Xavier forced Marquette into 13 turnovers, matching the Golden Eagles' season high.
