QUEENS, N.Y. - Xavier fell in the opening game of the three-game series at St. John's, 6-5, in 10 innings at Jack Kaiser Stadium on Friday afternoon. The Musketeers moved to 19-16 overall and 5-2 in BIG EAST play.Â
Xavier struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second after Nolan Tucker doubled to left, moved to third on a single from Aedan Anderson and scored on a balk. SJU picked up a run in the bottom of the frame to tie it 1-1, which held into the fourth.
The Red Storm scored a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-1 lead, but the Musketeers put together a three-run frame in the sixth to cut it to one. Clay Burdette got aboard after being hit by a pitch with one out in the frame, then moved to third on a single from Tucker. Another single from Anderson brought in Burdette to start the scoring for the frame.Â
With still just one out in the sixth, Jason Jelic walked to load the bases, and then after St. John's went to the bullpen, walks from Isaac Wachsmann and Luke Hammond brought in two more runs to cut it to 5-4.
Going into the ninth with the Musketeers trailing 5-4, Xavier got the first two batters aboard with Jake Lambdin and Carter Hendrickson getting on with walks. The pair moved into scoring position with double steals, and Lambdin tied the game up at 5-5, coming home on a sac fly from Connor Misch and forcing extra innings.
In the bottom of the 10th, St. John's brought in a run on a solo home run to take the walk-off win, 6-5.
