CINCINNATI --- Xavier University Women's Lacrosse Head Coach Meg Decker announced today that she is stepping down after four years at the helm. Decker was named the inaugural Xavier women's lacrosse head coach in July of 2021 and XU's first season as a program came in 2023.
"We appreciate Meg and her staff for their work the last four years, and we are grateful for her role in starting Xavier's Women's Lacrosse program," said Xavier Vice President and Director of Athletics Greg Christopher. "We collectively thank Meg for her efforts and wish her the best moving forward."
"Over the last four years, the foundation of this program has been forged through the dedication of many," said Decker. "In the building of anything, it takes a village. This year in particular, we had four big on-field goals for our program: bring on a full staff of seasoned coaches to mentor and develop our players, increase the lacrosse IQ as a group, have our midfielders step up into the long lost art of being true two-way midfielders, and to win our first Big East Conference game. I couldn't be more grateful to my coaching staff: Associate Head Coach Kirkland Lewis, Assistant Coach Margaret Wolford, and Assistant Coach Amanda Monahan for pouring into this program over the last year. They have changed the course of this program indefinitely. Kirkland, especially, was critical in educating our players on high level decision-making on the field and directing player development, and creating effective systems for the program. In the final three games of our season, our midfielders stepped up in a huge way. They had a tremendous impact in being two-way midfielders as we closed out our season, culminating in a historic conference win this past weekend. They moved the needle from the draw, causing turnovers on defense, transitioning the play, and putting the ball in the back of the net. Thank you to my players and the families who have supported this program. I am deeply grateful for you. We have accomplished so much and I will undoubtedly always be a proud Xavier Lacrosse supporter, as I have been since day one."Â
Â
Xavier finished the year with the No. 70 strength of schedule, which showed the increased competition level for a program that played the No. 112 schedule in year one. There were a number of highlights, including nationally-ranked stat leadership both as a team and an individual in Draw Controls per game, as well as Ground Balls per game. Xavier was No. 7 in the country in strength of depth, which shows the percentage of the team's contributions that come from the top-10 most active players. Xavier ended the year winning its first-ever Big East Conference game.
Â
Individually, Decker has had three different players earn Big East All-Conference honors and one player that was named Big East Freshman of the Year.
Â
Christopher said a national search is underway.
