03.04.26 | Baseball
Musketeers head to Oregon State for four-game series, running Friday through Monday
After a scoreless first, Ohio State took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Xavier responded with a four-run frame to take the lead in the top of the third and never relinquished it.
In the third, JD Crisp took a two-out walk to put a runner on for Jonathan Fitz, who drove him in with a double. Eddie Peters was hit by a pitch to put two on for Clay Burdette, who cleared the bases and put Xavier in front with his first home run of the season.
The Buckeyes picked up a run in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to 4-3, but Xavier got it back in the fourth after Peter Johnson got on with a walk, moved to third on a single from Donavan Canterberry, and scored on a single from Crisp for the 5-3 lead.
Ohio State picked up another run in the fourth to cut Xavier's lead to one, 5-4, before Xavier added runs in each of the next four innings to stretch the lead to lead 13-4.
Burdette got on with a one-out walk in the fifth, and Josh Stonehouse brought him in with his sixth home run of the season. Luke Hammond followed with a single, moved to second on a Johnson walk, advanced to third on a Canterberry single, and scored on a throwing error to make it 8-4.
Fitz led off the sixth with a walk, moved to second on a single from Peters, and scored on a double from Burdette. A sac fly from Hammond brought in Peters to make it a 10-4 Xavier lead.
Tommy Townsend led off the seventh with a triple, and Joey Arend, pinch running for Townsend, scored on a ground ball from Fitz to make it 11-4.
Xavier added two more runs in the eighth, getting a walk from Stonehouse and a single from Hammond to put two on with one out. Stonehouse scored on a single to right center from Johnson, and after moving to third on a double steal, Hammond came home as Canterberry reached on an error to make it a 13-4 lead headed into the ninth.
After the Buckeyes scored the fourth, Xavier's pitchers kept Ohio State off the board the rest of the way. With the Musketeers holding the nine-run lead in the bottom of the ninth, Ohio State got the first two runners aboard but were unable to get a run across to set the final score at 13-4.
Xavier now heads back to the west coast for six games, starting with a four-game series at Oregon State, running March 6-9. The Musketeers will then face Oregon for a pair of games on March 10 and 11.
