Musketeers face No. 2 seed DePaul at 1 PM on Sunday for title
The Musketeers will now play for the program's sixth-straight, and seventh overall, BIG EAST title and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. The Championship match is set for Sunday, April 19 at 1:00 p.m. the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center, streamed live on ESPN+.
Xavier will face the No. 2 seed DePaul in the Championship match. The Blue Demons are 12-10 on the season and took wins over Creighton (4-0) and St. John's (4-3) to advance to the title match. The two teams faced each other on April 4, with the Musketeers taking a 4-3 win in Chicago.
This marks the ninth time in the 12 tournaments held since Xavier joined the conference that the Musketeers will play in the BIG EAST Championship match. The Musketeers have advanced to at least the Semifinal round each season since Xavier joined the BIG EAST for the 2013-14 season.
The Musketeers took a 1-0 lead on the doubles point, with Emily Flowers and Natalie Smitek combining for a 6-1 win on court No. 3, and Abby Nugent and Clara Owen combining for a 6-2 win on court No. 1.
Abby Nugent made it a 2-0 Xavier lead with a 6-2, 6-3 win on the No. 1 singles court. UConn made it 2-1 with a 6-4, 7-5 decision against Madeleine Rexroat on court No. 2.
Clara Owen picked up a third point for the Musketeers, with 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 win on court No. 5.
The Huskies pulled even at 3-3 with a 6-7, 6-0, 6-4 win on court No. 4 against Ella DeFord, and a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win on court No. 6 against Abigail Siminski.
The match was decided on court No. 3, with Emily Flowers battling back from a 6-2 setback in the first set to take a 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 win, clinching the 4-3 win for the Musketeers.
