Xavier Takes 9-2 Win in Finale at Butler to Complete Three-Game Sweep

Musketeers wrap up regular season with Creighton next weekend
INDIANAPOLISÂ - Xavier baseball wrapped up its third sweep of conference play with a 9-2 win in game three at Butler on Sunday afternoon.
The Musketeers improved to 25-27 (13-5 BIG EAST) while the Bulldogs moved to 19-32 (8-10 BIG EAST). Xavier has now swept the last five series with Butler.
Xavier took a 1-0 lead in the first after Jorge Valdes led off with a single and came home on a Josh Stonehouse single. Valdes drove in a pair of runs in the second to make it a 3-0 Xavier lead, bringing in Tommy Townsend, who got on with a single, and Landon Mensik, who reached on an error.
Butler picked up a run in the third, and the Musketeers took the two-run lead into the sixth when Xavier posted a six-run frame. Singles from Tanner Thomas and Donavan Canterberry put two on for Valdes, who brought in Thomas with his fourth hit of the day. Canterberry came home as Burdette reached on an error, Valdes scored on a wild pitch, and Burdette came home on a single from Jonathan Fitz. A single from Luke Hammond and a walk for Townsend loaded the bases, and Thomas' second hit of the inning brought in two more runs to make it a 9-1 Xavier lead.
The Bulldogs picked up a run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Musketeers held Butler off the board the rest of the way to take the 9-2 win.
Xavier wraps up the regular season with a three-game series against Creighton, set to run from Thursday, May 14 through Saturday, May 16. Game one with the Bluejays is set to be held at Great American Ball Park, while the remainder of the series will be played at Hayden Field.

- Sam Stevens entered for the fourth, going 3.0 innings with one run scoring, unearned. Stevens allowed three hits and one walk, striking out a pair.
- Eli Bridenthal came in for the seventh, going 1.0 inning without allowing a run or a hit. Bridenthal finished with one strikeout and one walk.
- Joey Young pitched a scoreless eighth inning, allowing two hits and striking out a pair.
- Sam Eppley pitched the ninth, going 1.0 scoreless frame with two hits allowed, finishing with one strikeout.
