Xavier Drops Crosstown Match 3-1

CINCINNATI – Xavier volleyball fell 3-1 to Cincinnati Friday, Sept. 18 at home.
Xavier moves to 6-4 overall this season and 3-1 at home.
In the first set, Xavier managed seven kills. Ava Tilden claimed the first for the Musketeers. Cincinnati pulled away 5-1 at the beginning, and XU would not take the lead for the remainder of the set. The Bearcats would clinch the first set 25-12.
Xavier came out fighting in the second set with back-to-back kills from Quinci Thomas and Macy Hatkevich. A kill from Charlotte Moriarty tied the set six all and the crosstown foes would continue to go back and forth until Cincinnati secured the set with three consecutive kills.
The third set went to the Musketeers, winning 25-23. XU had 16 kills in the third frame and freshman Gabby Semona had three including the set-winner. The teams were tied through the set, but a pair of Bearcat errors propelled the Musketeers to the 25th point.
Tied at seven all in the fourth set, the Bearcats had four kills and the Musketeers made five errors that boosted Cincinnati up 18-10. Three more kills and an ace from Xavier would not be enough to close the deficit, and Cincinnati would take the fourth and final set 25-17.

Margo Kemp hit .360 with 13 kills against the Bearcats. Her 13 kills mark a season high and is just one mark off her career best.

Hatkevich had nine kills, one ace and four digs while hitting .500. The senior's nine kills are a career high. She has 28 kills total this season and 63 digs.

Moriarty led the Musketeers in digs with 15. The Kentucky native also tallied 11 kills and two assists.

Semona had five kills against the Bearcats while fellow freshman Cami Sher had four.

Xavier hosts Akron Sunday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. in Cintas Center.

The Musketeers begin BIG EAST play Friday, Sept. 25 hosting Georgetown. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
