ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE HONORS: Selected to the 2012 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team by the A-10 coaches and named 2012 Sporting News A-10 Freshman of the Year...earned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors after averaging 12.5 ppg. in XU's games at UMass on Feb. 21 and vs. Richmond on Feb. 25, including a career-high tying 19 at UMass.
WELLS MAKING HIS MARK IN XAVIER FRESHMAN HISTORY: Fourth on the team in scoring at 9.8 ppg...recorded two double-doubles: 14 points and a career-high 11 rebounds in the win over Notre Dame on March 16 and 13 points and 10 rebounds at Saint Louis on Feb. 28; those are the first double-doubles by an XU freshman since Romain Sato had 12 points and 12 rebounds at George Washington in the 2000-01 season (1-16-01)...in addition, Wells started the season opener against Morgan State and started all 32 games that he played as a freshman...the last Xavier freshman to start his first collegiate game was Romain Sato versus Miami (Ohio) on Nov. 18, 2000...Sato is also the last Xavier player to start every game he played in as a freshman.
MORE FROM 2011-12: Fourth on the team in scoring at 9.8 ppg. and third in rebounding at 4.9 rpg...scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half of the March 10 win over Saint Louis, making big play after big play...the 18 points were one point shy of his career high...had a career game at Memphis on Feb. 4 where he hit 8-of-10 from the field en route to a career-high 19 points to go with four assists and five rebounds...matched his career scoring high (19 points) and set a new career high for steals (three) in the game at Massachusetts on Feb. 21...came up big at Charlotte on Jan. 28, especially in the second half; contributed 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds, tallying eight points and four rebounds in the final 7:19 of action in the win over the 49ers...scored 16 points to go with a game-high nine rebounds in the win over Duquesne on Jan. 11...hit all seven of his shots from the field against the Dukes, including six dunks and a 3-pointer...had a team-high tying 15 points at La Salle on Jan. 4 to go with seven rebounds...had 13 points at Butler on Dec. 7 and 14 points and six rebounds against Cincinnati on Dec. 10...returned for the Gonzaga game on Dec. 31 after serving a four-game suspension that started with the Oral Roberts game on Dec. 18...started and played 21 minutes in his Xavier debut on Nov. 11 vs. Morgan State, contributing 12 points, four rebounds and two assists...hit 6-of-9 from the field en route to 16 points to go with seven rebounds against IPFW on Nov. 15.
TOP ESPN HIGHLIGHTS THREE TIMES THIS SEASON...FINALIST FOR DUNK OF THE YEAR HONORS ON ESPN2: Had six dunks in the win over Duquesne on Jan. 11 and one of them was the No. 5 Play of the Day on ESPN's SportsCenter...it marked his third top 10 play of the day this season....Wells' one-handed alley-oop dunk with his left hand (he's right-handed) in the first half against Morgan State on Nov. 11 was selected as the No. 2 Play of the Day on ESPN SportsCenter...one of his impressive fastbreak dunks at Butler on Dec. 7 made the No. 3 Play of the Day on ESPN SportsCenter...the dunk in the Morgan State game was among the eight national finalists for a March 26th ESPN2 show called "Dunks of the Year."
AT HARGRAVE MILITARY ACADEMY (CHATHAM, VA): Team recorded a 28-1 overall record this past season...teammates included P.J. Hairston (North Carolina)...the same program that has sent Xavier talented players such as David West, Jordan Crawford and Stanley Burrell.
AT WORD OF GOD CHRISTIAN ACADEMY (RALEIGH, N.C.): Two-time state champion...averaged 19.8 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals as a senior while leading his team to a 28-1 record...teammates included John Wall (Washington Wizards), C.J. Leslie (N.C. State), Bishop Daniels (Miami), Elijah Johnson (Kansas) and Emanuel Chapman (North Carolina Central).
PERSONAL: Undecided on a major...born April 15, 1992 in Raleigh, N.C...mother is Pamela Wells, who was an All-American basketball player at St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, N.C.
