Melanie Balcomb Resigns to Accept Vanderbilt Job

CINCINNATI--- Melanie Balcomb has resigned from her position as head women's basketball coach at Xavier University to accept the same position at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. Balcomb leaves Xavier as the women's basketball program's winningest coach with a 135-78 (.634) record in seven seasons. She led the Musketeers to three NCAA Tournaments, including the 2001 Elite Eight, and one WNIT. In addition, Balcomb, the 2000-01 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, guided Xavier to consecutive A-10 Tournament titles in 2000 and 2001, and leaves as the eighth-winningest coach in the league history with an A-10 career record of 67-45 (.598).

"The Xavier women's basketball program has come a long way since Coach Balcomb took the job in 1995," Xavier University Athletic Director Mike Bobinski said. "I am very thankful for all her work in developing the program to the point where it is today. She leaves having made the program one that is competitive nationally, and one that is respected for its integrity as well. I wish her the best of luck as she moves on to Vanderbilt University."

According to Bobinski, a nationwide search for a new coach will begin immediately. "I feel we have a situation here at Xavier that will be attractive to coaches, so I am optimistic there will be quite a bit of interest in the job," he said. "We will take the time to conduct a thorough search to find a qualified candidate who best fits the mission of Xavier University. It is my intention to not comment publicly on specific candidates or the search while it is in progress."
