CINCINNATI - Sophomore Matthew Wheeler scored his first career goals and junior Matt Kmetz tallied the game-winner to lead the Xavier University men's soccer team past Bowling Green by a 5-0 count on Wednesday evening at the XU Soccer Complex. With the win, the Musketeers improve to 1-1-1 on the year while the Falcons fall to 0-4-1.
Junior net-minder Liam Curran notched his second shutout of the young season and has not allowed a goal in 235 minutes of action.
The win marked the first for head coach Dave Schureck as XU's head coach. Schureck, a 1995 Xavier graduate, is in first year in charge of his alma mater's soccer program after serving as Dayton's head coach since 2000, where he accumulated a 57-33-8 record.
Kmetz scored at the 36:44 mark on a free kick he struck into the upper right-hand corner from just beyond the goal box. The goal was the midfielders third of his career and second game-winner.
Wheeler added a score less than two minutes later when he controlled a deflection off BG keeper Paul Shoemaker and rifled it into the back of the net.
The Musketeers played an outstanding second half, out-shooting bowling green 11-to-3 in the stanza while scoring three more times. Sophomore striker Jon Enders took a feed from Kmetz and found the back of the net for the second time this year at 77:51 and Kmetz added his second assist and fourth point of the night at 78:04 when senior back Chris Wolever hit a header inside the near post to make the score 5-0 XU.
Wheeler finished off the scoring minutes later when he took a cross from junior forward Toni Skudrzik and slipped it past Shoemaker.
XU out-shot BG 15-to-9 on the evening and the Musketeers put 10 of those 15 shots on goal.
Curran made two saves to preserve the shutout.
XU is back in action on Friday, September 16 when the Musketeers take on Florida Atlantic at 5:00 p.m. in Miami, Fla.
