INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Butler's John Mariscalco put the Bulldogs up 1-0 at the 16:25 mark on a penalty kick and BU added two late goals as the Xavier men's soccer team fell 3-0 to Butler on Friday evening at Varsity Field. With the loss, the Musketeers fall to 1-4-1 while the Bulldogs improve to 6-2-0.
Mariscalco put the Bulldogs up early as he placed the ball into the lower right corner past Xavier goalkeeper Adam Sokolowski. The Bulldogs then added an insurance goal at 74:49 when Frank Patano found the back of the net off assists from Aaron Thompson and Eduardo Garcia. Butler scored its third goal of the match with less than 10 minutes to go in the match when Garcia headed in a ball from 12 yards out.
Both teams recorded 14 shots in the match, but the Bulldogs held a decisive 10-to-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Sokolowski recorded seven saves in the losing effort for the Musketeers.
Xavier will return to the field on Sunday, Sept. 25, as the Musketeers will play host to Western Kentucky at 1:00 p.m. at the Xavier University Soccer Complex. Sunday's match is part of a men's and women's soccer double header as the women's team will open up A-10 action versus the Dayton Flyers at 4:00 p.m.
