CINCINNATI - Four Cardinals scored in double-figures and Ball State drained 10 3-point field goals en route to defeating the Xavier University women's basketball team by a 69-63 margin on Friday evening at Cintas Center. With the loss, Xavier slips to 8-4 on the year while BSU improves to 7-2.
Freshman standout Amber Harris led the way for Xavier once again as the Indianapolis native recorded her third career double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Harris also blocked five shots and stole the ball five times.
Senior guard Suntana Granderson was the only other Musketeer to score in double-digits with 12 points. Granderson also made three 3-point field goals and dished-out three assists.
Sophomore guard Jerri Taylor scored a season-high nine points and dropped a pair of dimes.
The Musketeers trailed by two points, 63-65, after Granderson made one of two free throws with 1:17 remaining in regulation. That would be the last point XU would record though as Ball State forward Julie Demuth answered with a jumper in the paint with 47-seconds remaining and the shot clock ready to expire.
Kelsey Corbin added a lay-up as the final horn sounded.
The Cardinals out-rebounded Xavier by a 42-to-32 margin including a 13-to-7 count on the offensive glass. Ball state took advantage of it offensive rebounding edge, out-scoring XU 17-6 on second chance points.
XU mounted a 7-0 run midway through the second half to take a 51-47 lead with 10:40 remaining. However, the Musketeers would go cold from the field and failed to connect on a field goal for the next 5:10.
Ball State heated up and went on a 12-4 run in that span to take a 59-55 lead with 5:50 to go.
Corbin led BSU's balanced offensive attack with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Demuth notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.
XU fell behind by a 12-5 count after Kelsey Corbin drilled a 3-pointer at the 15:20 mark. XU would respond with an 11-2 run over the next 5:20 and took a 16-14 lead at the 10:40 mark. The XU spurt was keyed by five points from Harris and capped with a Joei Clyburn fast break bucket.
The Musketeers were unable to shake BSU though as the Cardinals tied the game up, 29-29, at the break.
Xavier will return to action on New Year's Eve when the team travels to Lawrence, Kan. to take on the Jayhawks. Game time is set for 1:30 ET and fans can follow the action via live internet radio broadcast on GOXAVIER.com.
