CINCINNATI - Freshman forward Amber Harris scored a game-high 24 points and blocked five shots but it was not enough as the Xavier University women's basketball team dropped a 67-55 decision to No. 11 George Washington on Sunday afternoon at Cintas Center. With the loss, XU slips to 14-6 on the year and a level 2-2 in Atlantic 10 play. GW improves to 16-2 overall, 5-0 in the loop.
Harris' 24 came on 7-of-22 shooting and 10-of-13 from the free throw line. Harris also snared seven rebounds for XU. Senior guard Suntana Granderson scored 12 points and classmate Joei Clyburn came off the bench to record her fourth career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
XU trailed 26-21 at the break and cut the lead to three points, 33-30, when Granderson drilled a pull up jumper with 15:10 remaining in regulation. XU got a stop on the ensuing possession and Granderson shot an open 3-pointer on XU's next possession that would have tied the score.
However the ball clanged off the rim and GW charged out to an 8-0 spurt over the next 2:40 to take a 41-30 and control of the game.
XU cut the lead to five points on an Amber Harris lay-up at the 7:50 mark but the Musketeers were unable to cut into the lead any further.
Xavier was ice cold from deep on Sunday, going just 2-of-17 from 3-point land. XU also shot just 31.7 percent (19-of-60) but played solid defensively, holding GW to 36.9 percent shooting and out-rebounding the Colonials by a 46-to-40 margin.
GW took advantage of the contest early, jumping out to an 8-2 lead by the 16-minute mark. The lead grew to as many as 10 points, 17-7, after Jessica Adair netted one of her seven first-half points.
The Musketeers were able to whittle away at the lead though, scoring the last four points of the first half and headed into the locker room trailing 26-21.
Xavier will return to action on Friday, January 26 when the team welcomes Duquesne to Cintas Center. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Cintas Center.
