CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Xavier recorded its most hits and most runs scored of the young season, which resulted in a much needed win over Western Carolina, 17-12, to tie the three-game series at one game apiece. The two teams combined for 36 hits and 29 runs on the afternoon but the Catamounts committed three errors compared to only two by XU. The Musketeers are now 2-13 on the season, while WCU falls to 8-6 overall.
Xavier would score six runs within the first two innings and outscore Western Carolina 6-2 through three innings. After WCU pulled within one run, 6-5, after five complete innings, the Musketeers would pound out the most runs in an inning this season.
Jordan Wolf would start the inning off with a single to right. After advancing to second on a balk, Wolf would score on a triple down the right field line by classmate Adam Lipski. After Lipski's first triple of the season, Sean Farrell drew a walk and Jack Bonnikson doubled down the right field line to plate XU's second run of the inning. Bonnikson and Farrell would score off a double by Andy Zellers, who earned two of his career-high tying three RBIs on the play. After batting around the lineup, Wolf would single up the middle to drive in the sixth and final run of the inning to put Xavier in front 12-5.
XU would earn five more insurance runs in the top of the seventh before Western Carolina could match that production in the bottom half and add two more in the eighth to round out the scoring.
Lipski would lead the way at the plate and finish the day a career-high 4-for-7 at the plate with four RBIs and three runs scored. Wolf and Bonnikson would each tally three hits with Wolf finishing 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Bonnikson going 3-for-7 with a pair of runs scored and RBIs. Farrell, Adam Pasono and Tyler Aholt would each notch two hits in the game, while freshman Drew Schmidt set a new career high with two hits on the day.
Senior Mark Jansen picked up the win in relief as he went 2.0 innings allowing three runs on four hits with XU's only two strikeouts recorded. Classmate Bill Konecny got the start and went 4.0 innings and gave up three runs on seven hits, while issuing four walks.
