LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Xavier got on the scoreboard first but the Louisville offense was again too powerful to keep in check as the Musketeers fell in the series finale, 10-1, on Sunday afternoon at Jim Paterson Stadium. Xavier slips to 3-17 overall, while Louisville improves to 12-7 on the season.
Xavier struck first and scored its first run of the series after a double by Jordan Wolf led off the game. Adam Lipski laid down the sacrifice bunt to move Wolf to third before a sacrifice fly by sophomore Adam Pasono allowed Wolf to cross the plate to give XU the early 1-0 lead.
A leadoff single by the Cardinals in the bottom of the first was squashed after Wolf nailed the runner trying to advance to second. The next batter was hit by the pitch and later advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt. A ground out to Waskerwitz allowed the runner to score and knot the game at 1-1.
The Cardinals would post a run in each of the first three innings to take the quick 3-1 lead before tacking on two more in the fifth and five in the sixth to round out their scoring for the afternoon.
Wolf again paced the XU offense as the senior finished the day 2-for-4 with the Musketeers only extra-base hit. Waskerwitz and Lipski each finished 1-for-3, while sophomore Steve Brown ended 1-for-2 at the plate.
Charlie Leesman picked up his second loss of the season and is now 0-2 on the year. Leesman allowed eight runs, seven earned, on 12 hits and struck out three in 5.1 innings. Mark Janszen and Dan Graham provided relief for XU with Janszen going 0.2 innings and allowing two runs on three hits, while Graham allowed two hits in his 1.0 innings. Senior David Hartman threw the final inning of the day and allowed only a walk. Hartman has now thrown 7.1 innings on the season and only allowed one earned run.
The Musketeers will have tomorrow off before returning to Hayden Field on Tuesday afternoon to face crosstown rival Cincinnati at 3:00 pm. The starting pitcher for XU is still to be determined but freshman Zac Richard or junior Kyle Cowden could get the nod.
