COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Xavier University women's tennis team won its fourth straight dual meet, defeating Northern Colorado 6-1 on Tuesday. Senior Kara Courtney won her top flight singles match to earn her 13th solo victory of the season, tops on the squad.
Despite coming out on the losing end in the first doubles that went final, the Musketeers responded by winning the remaining two matches to claim the point and grab the early lead. Courtney and junior Kaitlyn Zinn bested their Flight 2 opponent, 8-4, to get things started for XU. Ducro and sophomore Christie Pleiman followed suit with an 8-6 victory in their Flight 3 match, giving the doubles point to the Musketeers.
The Bears evened the meet at one point apiece with a victory in the Flight 3 singles showdown, but that was the last point Xavier surrendered, winning the remaining five singles matches. Senior Jeannette Feider gave the lead back to XU with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph in her Flight 4 match and the Musketeers never looked back.
Sophomore Tifanie Treece snapped a three-match winless streak with a straight set victory in her Flight 2 match, giving Xavier a 3-1 advantage. Courtney then sealed the meet in XU's favor with a win in her Flight 1 showdown, securing the fourth and decisive point for the Musketeers.
Zinn and Ducro padded the final margin for XU with victories in their Flight 5 and 6 matches, respectively. Rebounding from losing the first set, Ducro prevailed in the third set super tiebreaker in her Flight 6 match to claim her team-best eighth straight singles victory.
It was the second team win in as many days for the Musketeers, who wrapped up a successful Spring Break trip to Colorado.
"This was a nice road trip for the girls, getting two wins over two quality teams," XU head coach Eric Toth said. "We were playing out of our comfort level a little bit, against teams who are more used to the conditions. I think it takes a certain amount of toughness to get through matches like this, and I think that will really help us as we continue with our conference season."
The Musketeers have a pair of matches before returning to Atlantic 10 Conference action. XU will square off with Louisville at 3:00 p.m. on March 13, and then Xavier will welcome Bellarmine to Cincinnati for a 7:00 p.m. showdown on March 14.
