Xavier University's head women's soccer coach, Woody Sherwood, announced today that he has hired former Xavier defensive standout Keri Heedum as an assistant coach on his new staff. Heedum has put together an impressive ten-year resume coaching both boys and girls since leaving Xavier, including most recently heading up the boys varsity program at University High School in Orlando, Florida.
Heedum was a four-year starter for the Musketeers and was a captain on the Xavier team that won XU's first Atlantic 10 Conference Championship and earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth in 1998.
"We are thrilled to welcome Keri back to the Xavier University family," said Sherwood. "I was fortunate enough to coach her when she was a player here at Xavier and it is a special opportunity to now be able to work with her. Keri will prove to be a wonderful role model for our student athletes and we look forward to her being able to share her knowledge and success with our players."
Heedum holds her USSF National C Coaching License, USSF National Youth Coaching License and an NSCAA National Goalkeeping Diploma.
Heedum began her coaching career as a State Staff coach for the Utah Youth Soccer Association in Salt Lake City, Utah, from 2000-03. In 2001, she was hired as the boys varsity coach at Kearns High School in Kearns, Utah, where she won a District championship before resigning in July 2003 and moving to Florida.
Upon arrival in Orlando, she was hired as a Health and Physical Education teacher at University High School. Heedum served as the girls varsity coach at University High School from 2004-08, the girls varsity coach at Hagerty High School from 2008-09 and most recently the only female in Central Florida coaching boys varsity soccer as the boys varsity coach at University High School from 2009-10.
While teaching and coaching high school students, she also bolstered her coaching background as a State Staff coach for the Florida Youth Soccer Association from 2003-10. She spent five years on the Premier and Academy coaching staff with Central Florida United Soccer Club and in 2009 joined the Florida Soccer Alliance's Premier, Academy and training staff.
Heedum spent majority of her youth playing for Zdravko Popovic with the Internationals Soccer Club in Cleveland, Ohio.
Heedum, 32, is a 1999 Xavier University graduate with a Bachelor's degree in Health and Physical Education K-12.
