Pirates Top Xavier, 90-82, at Seton Hall on Saturday

NEWARK, N.J. - The Xavier men's basketball team fell, 90-82, after a back and forth battle at Seton Hall on Saturday afternoon. The Musketeers (14-8; 5-5 BIG EAST) shot over 74 percent from inside the arc for the game, but didn't hit a three in the second half as the Pirates (15-6; 5-4 BIG EAST) took the rematch of the Jan. 7 69-58 Xavier win at Cintas Center.
After James Farr hit the opening bucket, Seton Hall used 2-of-3 shooting from outside the arc to start the game to fuel an 8-0 run. A Trevon Bluiett jumper broke a nearly four minute scoring drought for the Musketeers, sending the Xavier into the first media time out down, 8-2.
After cutting the lead to 2, 10-8, on a Bluiett three, the Pirates put together a 10-2 run to give SHU the 20-10 lead with 11:52 remaining in the half. A 5-0 outburst from Bluiett started a 17-1 run to allow the Musketeers to retake the lead and push out to a 27-21 lead with 6:14 remaining before halftime. During the stretch, the Musketeers held Seton Hall scoreless for 3:32, with the Pirates going 0-for-9 from the floor during the drought.
Bluiett led the Musketeers with 14 first half points as the Musketeers pushed the lead out to as many as seven, 31-24, before the break, but the Pirates responded with an 8-2 run to retake the lead. The Musketeers went into the locker room at the half trailing, 38-37.
Bluiett shot 5-of-6 from the floor in the first half to lead all scorers. Jalen Reynolds and Farr each hit 3-of-4 from the floor for six points as the Musketeers shot 53.6 percent for the first period. Myles Davis and Farr each grabbed four of Xavier's 16 rebounds, falling shy of SHU's 19 first half rebounds.
After hitting four of its first six three point attempts, Seton Hall closed the half shooting 0-for-6 from outside. The Musketeers hit one of nine from beyond the arc in the first half.
A Myles Davis basket-and-one allowed the Musketeers to retake the 40-38 lead to open the second half. Xavier held the 44-42 lead with 2:29 gone from the half when the Pirates used an 8-1 run to retake the 50-45 lead.
Seton Hall took a six point lead, 53-47, at the 14:21 mark when Reynolds scored five straight for the Musketeers to cut the lead to one.
Back-to-back baskets from SHU's Desi Rodriquez helped the Pirates take a seven point lead, 62-55, with less than 12 minutes remaining in the game. Xavier answered with a 7-0 run, fueled by five points from Dee Davis, to tie the game at 62 with just under 10 minutes to play.
Seton Hall held a 70-69 lead going into the final seven minutes of the game when Reynolds scored back-to-back baskets to give Xavier its first lead since the 16:37 mark in the second half.
The game was tied, 75-75, going into the final four minutes of the game. The Pirates hit 7-of-8 from the line to take an 82-75 lead into the final 2:30 of the game. The Musketeers would get as close as four, 85-81, with less than a minute remaining, but the Pirates would go 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the final 30 seconds to seal the 90-82 Seton Hall win.
Bluiett led the Musketeers with 19 points. Reynolds shot 8-of-10 from the floor to match his career high with 17, with 11 of those points coming after the break. Myles Davis finished with 12 and dished out a career-high eight assists. Stainbrook scored 11 on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor.
The Musketeers shot 51.7 percent from the floor, including going 29-of-39 on two-point field goals, but failed to hit a three point shot in the second half to finish shooting 1-of-19 from outside for the game. The Pirates shot 50 percent from the floor for the game, including shooting 9-of-24 from beyond the arc.
Reynolds grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, and Farr and Myles Davis grabbed six each as the Musketeers were outrebounded, 36-33.
SHU's Sterling Gibbs led all scorers with 22 points and Isaiah Whitehead had 19 points for the Pirates in his first game back from injury.
