CINCINNATI - Xavier tennis interim head coach Doug Matthews added former Michigan State tennis standout John Allare to the Xavier tennis coaching staff as an assistant coach prior to the start of the spring 2015 season.
"I'm excited for the opportunity to work with the talented student-athletes at Xavier," said Allare. "I've known Coach Matthews for a long time, so I'm looking forward to having the chance to work with him and help the team achieve its goals."
A 2009 graduate of Michigan State University, Allare has remained active in tennis since his collegiate career ended, serving as a tennis pro at the Club at Harper's Point in Cincinnati. Allare has remained part of the competitive scene in Cincinnati as well, partnering with Matthews to claim the doubles title at the 2013 Thomas E. Price Cincinnati Metropolitan Tennis Tournament.
Allare, a four-year starter at Michigan State, played in the No. 1 singles and doubles spot for the Spartans. As a senior, Allare earned a national ranking in doubles from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association after facing some of the best programs in the country in the Big Ten Conference.
"John brings a difference experience from playing in the Big Ten," Matthews said. "He has worked with some of the best players in the country at Harper's Point. That experience will greatly benefit our team. I'm excited for a great season."
Allare, a native of Maineville, Ohio, is a 2005 graduate of Kings High School, where he was a four-year member of the varsity tennis team. At Kings, Allare was the 2005 Ohio High School State Singles Champion, earned the 2004 and 2005 FAVC Player of the Year award and was named a 2005 High School All-American.
