Women's Soccer Falls, 1-0, to Providence on Thursday Night
10.01.15 | Women's Soccer
Sunday's Match at Georgetown Rescheduled for Oct. 14
CINCINNATI - After an early goal from Providence, the Xavier women's soccer team held the Friars scoreless and created late pressure on offense, but the Musketeers were unable to score the equalizer, falling 1-0, on Thursday.
"Except for giving away too many final third balls, that's as good performance against a quality team that I've seen in my six years here, " said head coach Woody Sherwood after the game. "If we do a better job valuing more possessions in the final third, we will put it all together."
Providence took the lead less than 10 minutes into the game after a shot off the crossbar ricocheted to PC's Christina Klaum deep in the box for her first goal of the season.
The Musketeers held the Friars without a goal the rest of the way, and late in the second half had a number of dangerous chances to score the equalizer.
In the 60th minute, sophomore Addie Englehart created an opportunity for the Musketeers just inside the 18 yard box, with the shot going narrowly over the goal to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of the Friars.
In the final 25 minutes, the Musketeers pressured the Providence defense, taking three corner kicks and a number of good looks at the net. Sophomore Kenadie Carlson, freshman Samantha Dewey and Englehart each had a team-high two shots, with Carlson's two shots on-goal leading the way for the Musketeers.
Sophomore Carly Alfano and senior Maria Libertin played all 90 minutes on the backline for the Musketeer, with Libertin marking PC's Catherine Zimmerman for much of the game to help the Xavier defense hold the preseason BIG EAST Co-Offensive Player of the Year scoreless. Junior goalkeeper Rachel Piccus collected seven saves to keep the Musketeers within striking distance.
"Our possession was outstanding; we moved the ball very well," said Sherwood. "Give Providence a lot of credit, they were very dangerous on counter attacks and got a goal off of that. Tonight was a big step for us in the right direction, but we know we need results in the BIG EAST."
The Musketeers were originally scheduled to play at Georgetown on Sunday, Oct. 4, but due to impending weather, the match has been rescheduled for Wednesday Oct. 14 at noon. Xavier will now prepare to face Marquette in Milwaukee on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 7:00 p.m. A link to live stats will be available on GoXavier.com.
