MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Xavier women's soccer team battled a tough Marquette squad for over 90 minutes, forcing overtime in its first BIG EAST road game of the season. The Golden Eagles scored in the second minute of extra time to give the Musketeers the 1-0 loss on Thursday night.
The game winner came in the 91st minute from MU's Cali Pydrowski on a floater from outside the box that slipped through goalkeeper Rachel Piccus' hands.
"Credit Marquette, they're a dangerous team," said head coach Woody Sherwood. "My heart absolutely breaks for Piccus, she was great all game, and on a rainy night, let a routine ball slip out of her hands that she's going to catch 99 out of 100 times. I think Marquette was surprised as anyone else that the ball ended up in the back of the net."
Piccus finished with eight saves on the evening, keeping the Musketeers in a draw for the entirety of regulation despite the attacking offense of the Golden Eagles. The backline of Carly Alfano, Courtney Kobashigawa and Maria Libertin each played all 91 minutes to help force Marquette into overtime.
The Musketeer offense created a number of dangerous looks in regulation, led by freshman Samantha Dewey who created three shots in quick succession midway through the second half to put pressure on the defense of the Golden Eagles. Dewey's first two looks went just wide, and the third forced Marquette goalkeeper Amanda Engel to make the save to keep the Musketeers from taking the lead. Kenadie Carlson, Andie Kennard and Addie Englehart each created good looks at the goal for the Xavier offense as well.
"I loved our fight," said Sherwood. "Contrary to what the stats say, creating over a dozen shots in a game, against a team like that, is a great statement for how far we've come versus that Marquette program over the past couple years."
Xavier returns home for its next match, hosting the Seton Hall Pirates on Sunday, Oct. 11. First touch is set for 1:00 p.m. Live stats will be available through GoXavier.com and video of the match will be available on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
