Musketeers lose second straight at home for first time since 2010

CINCINNATI – No. 24 Xavier held Providence off the scoreboard for 58-plus minutes, but the Friars erupted late to send the Musketeers to a 3-0 home loss on Saturday at XU Soccer Complex.

The setback dropped Xavier to 7-4 overall (1-2 BIG EAST) and marked the first time the Musketeers have suffered back-to-back home losses since 2010. Providence improved to 5-4-1 (1-2 BIG EAST) with the win.

The Friars held an 8-4 edge in shots at the break, but Jake Ciricillo – making his second career start – made two saves in the first half to keep PC off the scoreboard.

Late in the first half, Ian Vicars was assessed a red card resulting in a 10-man Musketeer lineup for the remainder of the match.

The Friars took advantage after halftime, scoring in the 59th, 66th and 77th to earn their first win in Cincinnati.

PC's leading scorer, Mac Steeves, broke the stalemate off a restart in the 59th with his eighth score of the season. Seven minutes later, Steeves assisted on the Friars' second goal which came from Dominik Machado.

In the 77th, PC effectively put the match away with a goal by Jeff Kilday off a corner by Alex Vigliotti.

Matt Vasquenza had three shots in the match and Calum Latham had two to lead Xavier. Ciricillo finished the night with three saves.

XU returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at St. John's. First kick is set for 7:00 p.m. ET.
