Musketeers top Hoyas in four sets, move to 12-4 in BIG EAST play

Three Xavier players post 10 or more kills in the road victory
WASHINGTON - Xavier volleyball ended the road schedule portion of its BIG EAST slate on Sunday afternoon, defeating Georgetown in four sets (25-20, 25-19, 23-25, 25-19) at McDonough Arena.

The Musketeers move to 16-11 (12-4 BIG EAST) on the year, while the Hoyas drop to 10-20 (4-13 BIG EAST). Xavier improved to 7-0 in the all-time series against Georgetown.

Abbey Bessler led three Xavier players with 10 or more kills with a match-high 15. The junior outside hitter also added 12 digs for her 15th double-double of the season.

Sofia Peterson added 12 kills and a .357 hitting percentage and Makayla Agin chipped in 10 kills. Mackenzi Humm dished out 24 assists, while McKena Estes had 20.

Defensively, the Musketeers held a 9-1 edge in blocks - paced by Lauren Frilling who had five block assists. The sophomore middle blocker added six kills in the win.

Xavier never trailed in the opening stanza and had a match-high .357 hitting percentage in the set. Tied at 20, the Musketeers ended the set on a 5-0 run to capture the frame, 25-20. Bessler had seven of her kills in the first set.

The Musketeers built a comfortable lead by using a 13-5 run to open the second set. Georgetown got within one point, 20-19, late in the set to force a Xavier timeout, but the Musketeers would again use a 5-0 run to close the stanza - winning the set 25-19.

Georgetown hit .361 in the third set, the team's best hitting percentage of the day. Trailing 24-21, the Musketeers took advantage of back-to-back Hoyas' errors to get with one, but a Symone Speech kill gave Georgetown its first set of the day, 25-23.

The Musketeers never trailed in the fourth set and led by as many as eight points twice before pulling away for a 25-19 victory.

Xavier returns to action on Friday, Nov. 20 against DePaul. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
