Samantha Dewey Unanimously Selected to BIG EAST All-Freshman Team
11.03.15 | Women's Soccer
NEW YORK –  Xavier women's soccer forward Samantha Dewey capped off a stellar freshman season by earning a spot on the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team with a unanimous vote from the league coaches.
"We are very excited to have our first All-BIG EAST appearance by a Xavier women's soccer player," said Xavier head coach Woody Sherwood. "There is a huge learning curve freshman year in any conference, let alone a conference of the BIG EAST's caliber. Sam has made great strides this season and has a truly bright future."
Dewey, a native of Fairland, Ind., helped lead a Musketeer squad that posted the most goals (28) since the 2006 season. Her season total of seven goals matched sophomore Kenadie Carlson for team-high and stands as the sixth most among all BIG EAST players through the end of the regular season.
Her first collegiate goal came against Purdue, the first of three unanswered for the Musketeers as they erased a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead against the Boilermakers. Purdue would eventually win, 4-3.
Included in her impressive feats during her freshman season, Dewey also collected a hat-trick against Marian, including scoring the game winner. She also added an insurance goal in the 2-0 win over IUPUI.
In conference competition, Dewey added an insurance goal in the 2-0 win over Villanova and in the 3-0 win over Creighton as the Musketeers posted their best finish in BIG EAST play since Xavier joined the conference in 2013.
Dewey was also among the best in the BIG EAST at setting up teammates for scoring opportunities, ranking second through the end of the season for assists per game (.44) and total assists (8). Her team-high assist tally ranked 30th among all players in NCAA Division I and stands as fifth most in a single season in Xavier's record books.
Dewey also led the Musketeers with 22 total points, the fifth most in the conference through the end of regular season play, and averaged 1.22 points per game, the fourth highest in the BIG EAST.
The All-Freshman Team nomination is added to the lengthy list of honors Dewey collected from the conference during her rookie season, including earning Freshman of the Week award twice (8/24 and 10/26) and a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll (9/7).
