Musketeers Top RedHawks, 10-5, on Tuesday Afternoon

MASON, Ohio - Xavier baseball scored a season-high 10 runs on Tuesday afternoon, defeating in-state rival Miami (Ohio), 10-5, at Prasco Park.
Xavier improved to 5-14 in win, while the RedHawks dropped to 2-13. The victory snapped a snapped a 10-game losing streak for the Musketeers.
Xavier posted 14 hits on the day with eight different players recording a hit. The Musketeers had six extra-base hits on the afternoon, including three triples. XU also had three stolen bases.
Andre Jernigan paced the Xavier offense as the junior infielder went 2-for-3 with four RBI, a triple and a run scored. Joe Forney went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two doubles, while Nate Soria added three hits and three runs. Rylan Bannon added three runs and two hits.
The RedHawks scored two runs on two hits in the top of the first inning to take an early 2-0 advantage before the Musketeers responded in the bottom of the frame with four runs to make the score 4-2. A three-RBI triple by Jerningan drove in the first three runs before a Derek Hasenbeck ground out to third base on the following play scored Jerningan for the final run.
A two-out, two-RBI double down the left-field line by Forney in the second inning gave Xavier a 6-2 lead. Miami (Ohio) added three runs on three hits and one error in the fifth inning to cut its deficit to one, 6-5.
The RedHawks threated to take its second lead of the day in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and one out before Xavier reliever Zach Johnson entered the game. The senior pitcher got Adam Yacek to pop up in the infield for the second out before posting an unassisted out a Jake Romano slow-hit ball down the first-base line to end the inning.
Xavier made the score 8-5 in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring runs on a Bannon RBI single and a Jeriningan sacrifice fly. The Musketeers added two more insurance runs in the eighth inning on three hits to make the score 10-5.
Greg Jacknewitz (2-3) earned the win for Xavier, striking out a career-high seven batters in four innings of work. He also issued four walks and surrendered five hits.
Zach Johnson posted the save for the Musketeers, striking out one batter in 3.2 scoreless innings of relief. He only allowed two hits and did not issue any walks.
Chris Ticherich (0-2) took the loss for the RedHawks as the senior pitcher allowed six runs and five hits in three innings of action.
Ryan Elble went 3-for-4 with four RBI and home run to pace the RedHawks at the plate. Yacek added three hits and one run.
Xavier had three more hits (14-11) than Miami (Ohio) on the afternoon. Both squads left 11 runners on base and committed one error each.
The midweek series with Miami (Ohio) continues on Wednesday, March 18. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. in Oxford, Ohio.
