Musketeers start preseason with shutout win as Ian Vicars scores in 36th minute
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Ian Vicars tallied in the 36th minute, leading No. 19 Xavier past SIUE, 1-0, in exhibition play on Friday night at Korte Stadium.
It was the first preseason action for XU, which returns home for another scrimmage on Tuesday, August 18 against Cincinnati State. First touch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Xavier Soccer Complex.
Vicars gave the Musketeers the lead before the half, receiving a ball from Eric McWoods and finishing top-right corner from about 15 yards out.
Vince Shaw and Dallas Jaye combined for the shutout in goal. Shaw earned the start and was untested in 57 minutes of action, while Jaye recorded one save down the stretch to preserve the clean sheet.
SIUE, the 2014 MVC Tournament Champions, took three corners against just one for Xavier, while the Musketeers outshot the Cougars, 5-3. No cards were issued in what was a clean match with just 17 total fouls.
