Musketeers fall 3-1 at XU Soccer Complex
CINCINNATI - The No. 10 Xavier men's soccer team dropped its second match in as many contests, falling to Virginia Tech, 3-1, on Sunday morning at the XU Soccer Complex.
The two squads were scheduled to play on Friday night at 7 p.m., but inclement weather forced the match to be postponed until 10 a.m. this morning. XU drops to 2-2 on the year, while the Hokies improve to 2-1.
Xavier got on the scoreboard early, finding the back of the net on a Chris Moore goal in the 14th minute - the first goal of his career. Moore scored from three yards out on the right off a ball played from Cory Brown following a corner kick from Alex Ridsdale.
Virginia Tech knotted the match 12 minutes later when Ricardo John placed the ball the bottom right corner of the goal from five yards out on the left. The goal was the first of the season for John.
The Hokies made the score 2-1 in the 31st minute when Dylan Huber scored his first goal of the season. The sophomore forward knocked the ball into the back of the net from just outside the left side of the goal box.
The Musketeers and Hokies both had six shots in the first stanza, with Xavier holding a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. Virginia Tech led the Musketeers, 2-1, at intermission.
Xavier pressured late in the second half, taking four it its five second-half shots in the closing 25 minutes. In the 69th minute, Jalen Brown crossed the ball from the right - missing Ridsdale attempting to head the ball into the back of the net from 10 yards in front of the goal.
Walker Andriot took Xavier's final shot of the match in the 85th minute as the redshirt-sophomore had his attempt blocked just inside the top of the box following a corner kick by Ridsdale. Virginia Tech took a 3-1 lead on its next possession when Merlin Baus found the back of the net for the second time this year, scoring from straight away just outside the box.
The Hokies took one more shot, 12-11, than the Musketeers and held a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. XU held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks on the day.
Andriot paced the XU offense with three shots, while Som Essome and John led the Hokies with three shots each.
Ben Lundgaard (2-1) posted the win between the pipes for Virginia Tech, making three saves. Jake Ciricillo (0-1) took the loss for XU as the junior made two saves and allowed three goals.
