33 Shots Stands as Second Most In Xavier Women’s Soccer History
CINCINNATI – Samantha Dewey added to the list of impressive feats achieved during her rookie campaign, knocking in three goals as the Xavier women's soccer team topped Marian (Ind.) University, 5-0, at the XU Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Dewey, a native of Fairland, Ind., scored the game-winner less than 10 minutes into the match after sophomore Maddie Tierney moved the ball past Marian goalkeeper Melissa Sturgill deep in the box. Dewey finished from about six yards out putting the Musketeers up, 1-0.
Xavier moved ahead 2-0 at the 18 minute mark when Dewey worked the ball inside the box and shot past the keeper from 15 yards out for the insurance goal.
At the 30 minute mark, the Musketeers added to the lead after corner kick from sophomore Kenadie Carlson on the left side curled into the net to set the score at 3-0.
Just before the half, junior Maddy John crossed to sophomore Skylar Groth, setting up senior Kassidy Mikula for the first goal of her Xavier career and giving the Musketeers a four-goal cushion going into halftime.
Dewey completed the hat trick 20 minutes into the second half after a shot from Tierney rebounded off the Marian goalkeeper. Dewey finished the goal to set the final margin of the game at 5-0.
"Each year we try to play a really good Division II, III or NAIA team," said Xavier head coach Woody Sherwood. "We play about this time of year and hopefully we get a chance to play some kids and try to compete. Marian is certainly capable of being in the top 25 of the NAIA. This is the first year we've really performed at a high level for the majority of the contest against that kind of opponent."
The Musketeers finished the game with 33 shots, which stands as the second most in a single game in Xavier women's soccer history. Senior Catherine Allon led with four shots, including three shots on goal. Dewey finished a perfect three-for-three on shots finding the net.
Junior goalkeeper Rachel Piccus picked up the win after holding the Knights scoreless in the first half. Freshman keeper Libby Grace made her first collegiate appearance in the second half, playing 45 minutes and collecting a save while not allowing a goal in her debut.
"We continue to create a lot of great attacking opportunities and certainly are defending very well, including getting a shutout," said Sherwood. "It's a credit to our team, they bought in starting last winter and continued through the spring and preseason and up to this point of the year. We look forward to IUPUI next Friday night."
The Musketeers return to action next Friday when Xavier hosts IUPUI in the second game of a seven-game home stand. First kick with the Jaguars is set for 6:30 p.m. Live stats will be available through GoXavier.com.
