Musketeers take on Hoyas in BIG EAST home opener at 1 PM
CINCINNATI - Xavier women's soccer opens its home BIG EAST schedule with one of the toughest tests in the conference, hosting No. 6/3 Georgetown on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 1:00 p.m. The Musketeers will host the Hoyas at NKU Soccer Stadium on the campus of Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights, Ky.Â

• Georgetown (8-1-1, 0-0-1 BE) was idle this week after its Thursday night match with Villanova was postponed due to inclement weather. In their last match, the Hoyas battled to a 0-0 double-overtime draw against Providence in its BIG EAST opener on Sunday, Sept. 25. The Hoyas out-shot the Friars, 19-9, overall and held a 13-0 advantage in corner kicks but where unable to find the back of the net. Sophomore goalkeeper Arielle Schechtman collected four saves in 110 minutes to keep the Friars scoreless.

• The draw with Providence ended a seven-game winning streak that earned the Hoyas the No. 6 spot in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll and a No. 3 ranking from Soccer America.Â
• During that win streak, GU picked up wins over West Virginia, George Washington, Virgina, George Mason, Rutgers, Colorado College and Delaware. The Hoyas also took a win in the season opener against Towson.
• The Hoyas lone loss of the season came against the No. 5/1 Stanford Cardinal, a 3-0 setback on August 21.

• Through 10 games, junior Rachel Corboz leads the Hoyas with 20 points on seven goals and six assists.

• Senior Grace Damaska has a team-high eight goals and an assist for a total of 17 points, the second highest total on the squad.

•  Sophomore Arielle Schechtman has played the bulk of the minute in-goal, playing over 912 minutes through 10 matches, collecting 30 saves for a .789 save percentage and allowing only eight goals for a GAA of 0.79.Â

• The Musketeers trail the all-time series with Georgetown 0-3-0, dating back to 2013 when Xavier joined the BIG EAST Conference. In the first matchup, the Hoyas took a 7-1 win in Washington, D.C.

• In last season's matchup in Washington, GU grabbed a 3-0 win after Crystal Thomas, who returns to the Hoyas as a graduate student this season, scored in the 29th minute. Rachel Corboz added a pair of insurance goals, in the 70th and 78th minutes.

•  The match with the Hoyas has been moved to the NKU Soccer Stadium on the campus of Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights, Ky. The XU Soccer Complex is temporarily unplayable due to severe flooding in certain sections of campus and surrounding areas.Â

• The Musketeers fell 2-1 in overtime at Providence on Thursday after Samantha Dewey's sixth goal helped the Musketeers for extra time. The Friars scored in the sixth minute of extra time to take the 2-1 win. The Musketeers move to 6-5-1 on the season and 0-2 in BIG EAST play.
• Providence scored in the 12th minute to take the early advantage, going ahead 1-0 after Katherine Hiller found a ball after a shot ricocheted off the cross bar for her sixth of the season.Â
• The Friars held the lead through the half but in the 60th minute, Kenadie Carlson got the ball behind the defense and broke down the field with Samantha Dewey trailing. Carlson took the ball to the left side of the goal, drawing Providence goalkeeper Kristyn Shea out of the net, then crossed to Dewey in front of the open net. Dewey finished to the right side to tie the game 1-1
• Dewey's goal was her sixth of the season, adding to her team-high total on goal and points (16). Carlson's assist marked her third of 2016.
•  Dewey's equalizer was the first goal the Friars had allowed in over 330 minutes of play, including through a 110-minute draw at No. 6/3 Georgetown, and the Musketeers' first tally of BIG EAST play for 2016.
• Xavier had several good chances for the go-ahead goal in the final 30 minutes of play, including a look for Dewey in the closing seconds of regulation, a shot off a free kick that narrowly went over the cross bar to send the game to overtime.
•  The Musketeers had the first two shots of extra time, including a shot for Kenadie Carlson on a breakaway that went just wide of being the game winner in the 92nd minute. Less than 60 seconds later, Addie Englehart fired from the edge of the 18-yard box but Providence collected the save.
• The game winner came after PC forced a corner kick that found its way into the box in the 96th minute. Toni Bizzarro got the stop on the initial shot, but lost the ball in a scrum in the six-yard box. Providence's Katie Day found the ball just in front of the net and poked it in to end the game.
•  Rachel Piccus made her ninth start of the season in goal, allowing one goal and collecting three first-half saves to keep the Musketeers within striking distance. Toni Bizzarro relieved Piccus at halftime and made four saves in the second period, including several diving stops on dangerous chances, to keep the game in a draw and send it to overtime. Piccus and Bizzarro combined for eight saves and each finished with a goal against.Â

• Through 12 games, Samantha Dewey, the leading points scorer from 2015, has posted a team-leading 16 points off a team-highs in goals (6) and assists (4). Dewey's six total goals ranks T-5th in the BIG EAST. Her point total stands at sixth in the conference.

•  Kenadie Carlson added another point to her total with an assist to Dewey against Providence, bringing her to nine points through 12 games, the second hightest total on the team. Carlson scored the lone goal for the Musketeers at IUPUI to bring her season total to three to go with three assists.
•  Tori Doss has posted eight points through 12 games, the third highest total on the squad. Doss has four goals on the season after she scored the game-winner against Ohio.

• Xavier's 18 goals through 12 games have come from eight different Musketeers. Eight Musketeers have also dished out assists.

• Rachel Piccus has played a team-high 725 minutes in goal, starting nine of Xavier's 12 matches. Piccus has allowed 13 goals against while collecting 75.5 percent of shots against her for a total of 40 saves. Piccus has picked up four wins on the season, including a pair of shutouts.

• Toni Bizzarro has rotated time at goal with Piccus, starting three games, and coming in during the second half in four others. Through 380 minutes of action, Bizzarro has 19 saves for a 76.0 save percentage while allowing six goals for a 1.42 GAA. In seven appearances, Bizzarro has picked up a pair of wins.
• In the backfield, Ellie Eckerle has played over 1000 minutes for the Musketeers, averaging out to 83.9 minutes per game through 12 matches. Courtney Kobashigawa also chips in over 83 minutes per match for the Musketeers. The senior defenders are joined on the back line by Carly Alfano who has played over 86 minutes per game in 10 appearances.

• Bizzarro was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after Bizzarro making her first collegiate appearance against NKU on Sept. 6, splitting time with Rachel Piccus in frame in all three of the Musketeers' matches that week to total 135 minutes. In those three appearances, she collected seven saves for a .875 save percentage while allowing only one goal on the way to a 2-0 record.

•  Kenadie Carlson earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after she totaled five points through three games to help the Musketeers to a 2-1 record during that week. After the Musketeers fell behind 1-0 at NKU, Carlson scored her first of the season just out of the halftime break to tie the game which the Musketeers won on a last second goal. Carlson collected another three points in the win at Youngstown State, assisting on Samantha Dewey's goal in the 60th minute and scoring the game-winner in the 73rd. This is Carlson's first weekly award of the season.
• Bizzarro and Carlson join three other Musketeers who have earned weekly awards from the BIG EAST this season. In week one, Rachel Piccus earned Goalkeeper of the Week honors, while Maddie Tierney was named to the Weekly Honor Roll. Samantha Dewey also earned Weekly Honor Roll recognition for the week of Sept. 5.
