Musketeers see four-match unbeaten streak snapped on Tuesday night at XU Soccer Complex
CINCINNATI – Playing at home for the first time in nearly two months, Xavier men's soccer was out-dueled by visiting SIU Edwardsville on Tuesday night at XU Soccer Complex.
The Cougars (6-4-3, 2-1-1) made an early restart goal stand up, despite quality chances for both sides the rest of the way. SIUE extended its unbeaten streak to six straight matches and is now 5-0-1 since Sept. 28.
Xavier drops to 7-4-3 (3-1-1 BIG EAST) with the setback, and will look to get back on track with four league matches remaining in the regular season.
XU finishes the non-conference portion of its schedule at 4-3-2 and with a 3-1-1 home record.
• 14' | SIUE | Ivan Gutierrez punched a ball in from the back post off a corner kick by Keegan McHugh. Andrew Kendall-Moullin was given an assist on the sequence as well, directing a header toward Gutierrez from the middle of the box.
• Xavier saw a season-high four-match unbeaten streak snapped and dropped to 5-1-2 at home for the season.
• The Musketeers were able to return to the Xavier Soccer Complex for the first time since Aug. 26 after repairs were completed following floods in late August.
• Colin Hanley made five saves, including several acrobatic stops, in another solid match between the pipes.
• SIUE outshot Xavier 14-9, including a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. XU held a 6-4 advantage in corners.
• Matt Vasquenza paced the Musketeers with three shots.
• Xavier returns to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 22 at Marquette. Kickoff is slated for 7:05 p.m.
• Xavier men's soccer has reached the NCAA Tournament in four of the last six seasons.
• The Musketeers finished 2015 at 12-6-1 overall, marking a sixth straight season with at least 10 wins – one of just 12 programs that can claim the feat.
• Last fall also marked Xavier's third straight finish in the top-four of the BIG EAST.
• XU was ranked in the nation's top-10 by the NSCAA for the third time in four years, while knocking of the national No. 1 (Creighton) and No. 2 (Notre Dame) on the road last season. The Musketeers are widely believed to be the first program to ever knock off both a No. 1 and a No. 2 on the road in the same season.
