Andie Kennard scores first goal of Xavier career
OMAHA, Neb. - Andie Kennard scored the first goal of her Xavier career during a wild 20 opening minutes of the match, but two early scores would be all Creighton would need to secure the win. The Musketeers fell, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon, moving to 7-10-1 on the season 1-7 in BIG EAST play.
Creighton attacked from the whistle, starting a wild first half with a tally in the first two minutes off a header for Taryn Jakubowski off a set piece. The ball soared over Rachel Piccus, who made the start in-goal, sneaking just under the cross bar in the far corner to put CU up 1-0.
The Bluejays struck again less than two minutes later when Ylenia Sachau scored off a corner kick at the 3:45 mark.
After the Musketeers countered to cut the lead to 2-1 in the 18th minute, CU's Jakubowski struck less than a minute later to put the Bluejays up 3-1.
Piccus finished the first half with four saves to keep the Bluejays from scoring again in the first half.
After four total tallies in the first 20 minutes, the game remained scoreless until the 65th minute when BIG EAST leading scorer Lauren Sullivan tallied for the Bluejays to bring the lead to 4-1.
CU ended the game much like it began, scoring a pair in quick succession with Kate Johnson and Hannah Miller scoring a pair in the 84th minute.
Piccus played the full 90 minutes, finishing with five saves. Courtney Kobashigawa and Carly Alfano each played the full 90 minutes on the back line.
After the offensive outburst for the Bluejays to start the match, the Musketeers answered in the 18th minute. Maddie Tierney got the ball at the top of the 18-yard box, serving it to Andie Kennard on the left side, just outside the 6-yard box. Kennard collected possession and lost her defender, shooting a rocket past the keeper to cut the Creighton lead to 2-1. The goal marks the first of Kennard's Xavier career. The assist marked Tierney's third of the season.
After the Bluejays re-extended the lead to a pair in the first half, Xavier came out of the halftime break pressuring on offense, getting three shots and a corner kick early in the period, including a shot from Kenadie Carlson from the top of the box that went just over the crossbar in the 50th minute.
The Musketeers finished with 11 shots, led by a pair for Kennard, Samatha Dewey and Courtney Lankford, but were unable to chip into the Bluejay advantage. Eight different Musketeers recorded attempts.
The Musketeers return home for Senior Day on Friday, Oct. 28 when Xavier hosts Butler at 6:35 p.m. Xavier's senior student-athletes will be honored prior to the game. The match against Butler is also Xavier's annual Breast Cancer Awareness Game, the first 250 fans in attendance will receive pink thunder sticks. The BU match is also an X-Pulse Double Check-in Match.
