Pirates score in 89th minute to sink Musketeers on Senior Day

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Xavier men's soccer fell late on Saturday, surrendering an 89th minute score to Seton Hall in a 2-1 loss at Owen T. Carroll Field.

With the loss, XU drops to 8-6-3 (4-3-1 BIG EAST) with one match remaining in the regular season. Seton Hall improves to 4-10-2 and 2-5-1 in league play with the win.

HOW THEY SCORED

• 53' | Seton Hall | Spencer Burkhardt scored from the top of the box, getting a lay off pass from Jonathan Jimenez to give SHU a 1-0 lead.
• 54' | Xavier | Samson Sergi answered immediately for XU, scoring his first career goal to equalize. Brahan Gamarra was credited with the assist, gaining his first career point.
• 89' | Xavier | Nate Tremonti scored the game-winner with just a minute remaining, getting an assist from Corey Burkhardt after a scramble at the top of the box.

NOTABLE

• Samson Sergi and Brahan Gamarra teamed up on the equalizer early in the second half, both notching their first career points.
• Xavier is now 21-10-4 (.657) in league play since joining the BIG EAST ahead of the 2013 season.
• Seton Hall improved to 2-1-1 at home in league play with the win.
• SHU picked up its first win in the series on Saturday night. Xavier now leads the all-time series against Seton Hall 3-1 and has out-scored SHU 10-3 in those matchups.
• SHU outshot XU 13-12 and 5-3 in shots on goal. Corners were even at 4-4.
• Creighton and Villanova both lost on Saturday, leaving Xavier still in a tie for third-place in the BIG EAST standings with one regular season match to go.

UP NEXT

• Xavier returns home on Thursday, Nov. 3 against Butler at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast on BEDN and will carry serious seeding implications for the upcoming BIG EAST Championships, as XU enters the match in a tie for third-place with Villanova and Creighton at 4-3-1. Butler is in second overall at 5-3, while Providence remains in first-place at 6-2 overall.

• Xavier men's soccer has reached the NCAA Tournament in four of the last six seasons.
• The Musketeers finished 2015 at 12-6-1 overall, marking a sixth straight season with at least 10 wins – one of just 12 programs that can claim the feat.
• Last fall also marked Xavier's third straight finish in the top-four of the BIG EAST.
• XU was ranked in the nation's top-10 by the NSCAA for the third time in four years, while knocking of the national No. 1 (Creighton) and No. 2 (Notre Dame) on the road last season. The Musketeers are widely believed to be the first program to ever knock off both a No. 1 and a No. 2 on the road in the same season.
