Musketeers travel to Butler on Saturday
CINCINNATI – Xavier track and field opens the 2016 outdoor track and field season at the Stan Lyons Invitational on March 19. Saturday's meet will be hosted by Butler.
Xavier most recently competed at the BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championships on Feb. 26-27. Four Musketeers earned all-conference honors at the championship meet.
Grayson Jenkins and Jordan Shepherd are looked to pace the men's team in the 1,500-meter run, while Josh Phelan is expected to have a breakout performance in the 400-meter hurdles.
"Grayson and Jordan have both looked great in practice and are ready for breakthrough performances," said head coach Ryan Orner. "Although they're in the second heat, I think they have a legit shot to score based on their finish time.
"Josh took up this event last year as a sophomore and has come a long way. I'm excited to see what he can do in his first attempt this season against competition from our BIG EAST rivals Butler."
Sean Farnan, Russell Platt and Zachary Polk are all entered into the 200-meter dash.
"I expect all three of our guys in the men's 200-meter dash to place very well," added Orner. "The temperature might not be ideal for fast times, but I expect them to get out there and compete with anyone that tries to take one of those top five spots from them.
"Nolan Daniels is also ready to have a breakthrough in the 800-meter run and should matchup well against the guys in his heat."
Meghan Vogel is entered into the 1,500-meter run following a strong performance in the one-mile run at the BIG EAST Championships.
"Meghan has a lot to prove coming off her performance at the BIG EAST Championship indoors in the mile," said Orner. "She's hungry and ready to go head-to-head with the Butler girls this weekend."
Victoria Chiller is coming off a strong performance in the 4x800 relay at the BIG EAST Championships and is expected to post a personal-best time in the 800-meter run and score for the women's team. Sarah Clark, competing in the second heat of the event, is also expected to score in the event.
"We have three of our most talented freshman running in the 400 hurdles," added Orner. "I think we have a chance to put three in the top eight in that event."
Sydney Larkin, following an all-conference performance in at the BIG EAST Championships, is entered in the 200-meter dash.
"Sydney had a great indoor season, setting a personal best almost every time she ran," said Orner. "Although she's not in her main event on Saturday, I think she has a good shot at winning the 200-meter dash."
