
Gellenbeck Leads Xavier to Extra Innings Win at USC Upstate, 3-2

Musketeers win second straight on the road, go for series sweep on Sunday at 1 p.m.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Xavier baseball won its second straight on Saturday, getting an RBI single from Joe Gellenbeck in the 10th inning to down USC Upstate on the road, 3-2, in 10 innings.
The Musketeers (2-7) will shoot for a series sweep tomorrow at 1 p.m. with Trent Astle taking the ball.

• Xavier got hits from Matt Fallon (1-for-5, RBI), Will LaRue (1-for-4, R), Joe Gellenbeck (1-for-4, RBI), Nate Soria (1-for-4), Ethan Schmidt (1-for-3, R) and David Morton (1-for-4, HR).
• Morton's solo homer in the third inning was the second of his Xavier career and first since the 2014 season. The senior second baseman is now riding a three-game hitting streak and is 5-for-13 (.385) with four RBI in his last three games.
• LaRue stole a base for the fourth straight game, pushing his season total to seven, and scored a run for the third straight game.
• Fallon reached base with a fifth inning single and has now reached in all nine of Xavier's games this year.
• Gellenbeck's RBI single in the 10th gave him a five-game hitting streak.
• The Musketeers added three stolen bases today, pushing their weekend total to six. One of the nation's top running teams early on this year, XU has 23 steals in its last five games.

• Xavier's pitching was solid for a second straight game, as the Musketeers have allowed just three runs in 19 innings thus far in Spartanburg.
• Lefty Greg Jacknewitz was solid in a six inning outing, allowing two runs and limiting USC Upstate to five hits while striking out two.
• Freshman Trey Schramm (1-0) followed Jacknewitz with three superb innings of relief, earning his first career win. The righty struck out three and allowed just one hit.
• Sophomore Garrett Schilling worked the bottom of the 10th, striking out one and earning his first career save with a scoreless frame.

FIFTH INNING:Â Ethan Schmidt started a one out rally with a single up the middle, advancing to second on a fielder's choice. Rylan Bannon then worked a walk before Matt Fallon singled to center to score Schmidt.
TENTH INNING:Â Still tied at 2-2, Will LaRue reached with a one out single and stole second base. Dan Rizzie followed with a fly out to center, allowing LaRue to tag and advance to third. Joe Gellenbeck played hero next, singling to center to give Xavier the lead with what was ultimately the game-deciding hit.
