Men's Soccer Battles Saint Louis to Spring Draw

Jalen Brown scored the equalizer for the Musketeers early in the second half
CINCINNATI – Xavier men's soccer continued its spring schedule on Saturday with a draw against Saint Louis, 1-1, at Xavier Soccer Complex.
The Billikens owned the run of play in the first 20 minutes, scoring at the 22 minute mark on a header off a restart. Xavier then took control of the game for the remainder of the half, including a near-miss by Jalen Brown just before the half.
"Home mid-day games are an issue of ours and today was scheduled for that reason," said head coach Andy Fleming. "Unfortunately, we came out flat. It was SLU's first spring game and our third and they clearly were more excited to be here initially than we were. Once they scored I thought we did well to regroup, stay the course and respond with a good finish to the half and a strong second half. SLU didn't have many chances, but the ones they did get were too close for my liking and they came from service and marking runners on restarts. To lose Cory Brown for the game and tighten up in the back as well as we did, I was impressed with that and I thought a few of our young guys took some steps forward today."
In the second half, XU equalized in the first five minutes of half when Jalen Brown dispossessed a SLU defender trying to come out of the back. The ball went in on a breakaway, a 40 yard run overall to tie it at 1-1. Xavier had wind and spent the majority of half with ball in SLU's end, but were unable to put away a number of good looks toward the end of the game.
"Between the 30-MPH winds, losing your best player for the game and going down early, I thought we handled that very well and grew as a result," said Fleming. "Jacob Goodall had his first extensive action for us, Cameron Taylor played his first game in 13 months after surgery, while Walker Andriot, Jalen Brown and Josh Sutherland all had strong two way games in the midfield for us."
