Musketeer freshman led team with five points during 1-0-1 week
NEW YORK – Men's soccer freshman Derrick Otim was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday, earning the award for the first time in his career.
The Nottingham, England native led the Musketeers to a 1-0-1 week behind a team-high five points, six shots and four shots on goal. The midfielder/forward scored in both of XU's matches, which included a ranked result against Dartmouth and a rivalry victory over UC.
Against the Big Green, Otim gave XU a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute on Monday in an eventual 1-1 draw. He also scored a second goal in 87th minute of Xavier's 4-2 win against UC, giving the Musketeers a two-goal cushion in the match. Additionally, Otim assisted on Todd Pratzner's game-winner in the 83rd minute.
Off to a fast start in his Xavier career, Otim now has a goal in three of five matches and leads the Musketeers with seven points on the year.
• Xavier men's soccer has reached the NCAA Tournament in four of the last six seasons.
• The Musketeers finished 2015 at 12-6-1 overall, marking a sixth straight season with at least 10 wins – one of just 12 programs that can claim the feat.
• Last fall also marked Xavier's third straight finish in the top-four of the BIG EAST.
• XU was ranked in the nation's top-10 by the NSCAA for the third time in four years, while knocking of the national No. 1 (Creighton) and No. 2 (Notre Dame) on the road last season. The Musketeers are widely believed to be the first program to ever knock off both a No. 1 and a No. 2 on the road in the same season.
