Dewey ties game with sixth tally of 2016 off assist from Carlson
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Samantha Dewey's sixth goal of the season propelled Xavier women's soccer to overtime at Providence on Thursday night, but the Friars scored in the sixth minute of extra time to take the 2-1 win. The Musketeers move to 6-5-1 on the season and 0-2 in BIG EAST play.
Â
After the Friars took an early lead, holding the advantage through the halftime break, the Musketeers tied it up on their first tally of BIG EAST play for 2016. In the 60th minute, Kenadie Carlson got the ball behind the defense and broke down the field with Samantha Dewey trailing. Carlson took the ball to the left side of the goal, drawing Providence goalkeeper Kristyn Shea out of the net, then crossed to Dewey in front of the open net. Dewey finished to the right side to tie the game 1-1 on her sixth goal of the season, adding to her team-high total on goal and points (16). Carlson's assist marked her third of 2016.
Â
Dewey's equalizer was the first goal the Friars had allowed in over 330 minutes of play, including through a 110-minute draw at No. 6/3 Georgetown.
Â
After tying the game, Xavier had several good chances for the go-ahead goal, including a look for Dewey in the closing seconds of regulation, a shot off a free kick that narrowly went over the cross bar to send the game to overtime.
Â
The Musketeers had the first two shots of extra time, including a shot for Kenadie Carlson on a breakaway that went just wide of being the game winner in the 92nd minute. Less than 60 seconds later, Addie Englehart fired from the edge of the 18-yard box but PC's Shea collected the save.
Â
Dewey led the Musketeers with a team-high four shots, including a game-high three on-frame.
Â
Providence scored in the 12th minute to take the early advantage, going ahead 1-0 after Katherine Hiller found a ball after a shot ricocheted off the cross bar for her sixth of the season. The Friars would finish with seven first half shots, but Rachel Piccus, who made her ninth start of the season in goal, collected three first-half saves to keep the Musketeers within striking distance.
The Friars held the lead until the 60th minute when Dewey scored the equalizer, and Xavier defense held Providence in the 1-1 draw through the end of regulation. Toni Bizzarro, who relieved Piccus at halftime, made four saves in the second period, including several diving stops on dangerous chances, to keep the game in a draw and send it to overtime.
The Musketeers held Providence without a goal for goal for 82 minutes, with Bizzarro totaling five saves after getting a pair in overtime, before the Friars knocked in the golden goal to end the game in the 96th minute. The game winner came after PC forced a corner kick that found its way into the box. Bizzarro got the stop on the initial save, but lost the ball in a scrum in the six-yard box. Providence's Katie Day found the ball just in front of the net and poked it in to end the game.
Piccus and Bizzarro combined for eight saves, and each finished with a goal against.
Â
"I thought our kids did great job playing against a really good Providence team that plays a formation that is difficult to defend. If I had one criticism of our team, it would be that we had great possession but did not produce a quality final ball to end with a shot. We had too many possessions that built to the final third but ended up being turned over. We had the best chance of the game in overtime and missed one. Their goal to win it, give them credit for getting the ball down into our box, but it was an absolute atrocity that the official allowed for our goalkeeper to be run over, no foul called and their kid laying in the goal offsides when she scores... and that's how we lose the game. We've got a tough challenge against Georgetown, one of the top five or six teams in the country, on Sunday, and they did not have to play tonight. It's a quick turnaround for us, but we're looking forward to that challenge."
