09.05.16 | Men's Soccer
Xavier led 1-0 for nearly the whole match before Dartmouth's 89th minute goal forced overtime
CINCINNATI – After leading for a majority of the match, Xavier men's soccer allowed a late goal and battled to an eventual 1-1 tie against No. 16/24 Dartmouth on Monday at Gettler Stadium.
With the result, the Musketeers moved to 1-1-2 on the young season, while Dartmouth moves to 0-0-2. The Big Green were coming off a road result at No. 17 Kentucky to open their season.
• 15' | Xavier | Derrick Otim finished off a long run by Matt Nance, tapping in a loose ball in front of the goal.
• 89' | Dartmouth | Noah Paravicini received a long throw-in directly in front of the goal and placed a header to the right post to equalize.
• It was the second straight double overtime 1-1 result for the Musketeers. XU moves to 0-0-2 in overtime during 2016.
• Freshman Derrick Otim's goal was his second of the season.
• Walker Andriot's assist was his second in as many matches and fourth of his career. Matt Nance also recorded his first assist of the season and fourth of his career on Otim's score.
• Jake Ciricillo played all 110 minutes in goal, making two saves and allowing just one goal on a set piece.
• Majed Osman led XU in shots with a season-high six. Jalen Brown, Derrick Otim and Matt Nance each recorded three shots apiece.
• Xavier outshot Dartmouth 18-15 overall, including 8-3 in the opening half. The Musketeers also owned a 5-3 edge in shots during extra time.
• Dartmouth was the 22nd ranked opponent XU has faced since 2010. The Musketeers are now 8-9-5 against ranked teams in the last six-plus seasons.
"I think you have to credit to Dartmouth for grinding it out late and getting a goal late. That's something we went over in training and were prepared for, but we missed a detail with fronting the target on the throw – and that's disappointing. Allowing a goal with 26 seconds left in regulation, a lot of teams would have not responded well. We responded wonderfully and had command of the overtime and got back on the horse, so to speak. This team, no one's really beaten us yet. We've beaten ourselves and we've gotten a result in three of four games. But this team is very close to turning the corner." - Andy Fleming
• Xavier returns to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 9 for the "Crosstown Derby" against local rival Cincinnati. First touch is scheduled for 7 p.m. with a location still TBA.
• Xavier men's soccer has reached the NCAA Tournament in four of the last six seasons.
• The Musketeers finished 2015 at 12-6-1 overall, marking a sixth straight season with at least 10 wins – one of just 12 programs that can claim the feat.
• Last fall also marked Xavier's third straight finish in the top-four of the BIG EAST.
• XU was ranked in the nation's top-10 by the NSCAA for the third time in four years, while knocking of the national No. 1 (Creighton) and No. 2 (Notre Dame) on the road last season. The Musketeers are widely believed to be the first program to ever knock off both a No. 1 and a No. 2 on the road in the same season.
With the result, the Musketeers moved to 1-1-2 on the young season, while Dartmouth moves to 0-0-2. The Big Green were coming off a road result at No. 17 Kentucky to open their season.
