Bluiett's Career Night Not Enough to Overcome No. 19 Cincinnati

Junior guard finishes with 40 points, the most for a Musketeer since David West in 2003
CINCINNATI – A career night for Trevon Bluiett wasn't enough to hold off No. 19 Cincinnati as No. 24/22 Xavier fell, 86-78, in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout on Thursday. Bluiett led all scorers with 40 points after hitting his first 10 shots from the field, including eight three-pointers.
Xavier moves to 14-6 overall and remains at 4-3 in BIG EAST play after the non-conference tilt.
Bluiett's 40 points on 12-of-15 shooting, including going 9-of-11 from three, tops his previous career-high of 27 set against Colorado earlier this season. It also marked new career highs in field goals and made three pointers.
Bluiett's performance marks the first time a Musketeer scored 40 or more points in a game since David West scored 47 against Dayton on February, 8, 2003. His nine made three pointers ties the school record set by Romain Sato against Rhode Island in 2003.
J.P. Macura added 13 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Edmond Sumner dished out seven assists and Quentin Goodin finished with six as the Musketeers assisted on 18 of 22 field goals.
Cincinnati owned a 42-33 advantage on the boards overall and a 19-13 advantage on offensive boards, turning those second chances into 30 points to four second-chance points for the Musketeers.
Cincinnati took the early lead, going ahead by as many as five, 13-8, in the first six minutes of the game. The Bearcats used eight second chance points to build the early lead, out-rebound Xavier 4-0 off the offensive glass.
Xavier responded to Cincinnati's inside game with outside shooting, hitting six of its first eight three pointers, fueled by a pair of early threes from Macura. The Musketeers' first lead came at the 12:32 mark, leading 15-13.
An 8-1 Xavier run, with all eight points coming from Bluiett, extend the Musketeer lead out to seven, 21-16, with 10 minutes to play in the half.
The Musketeers maintained the lead for the remainder of the half, pushing the advantage to eight, 44-36, on a Bluiett three at the buzzer. The Musketeers' eight-point lead at the break was the largest for either team in the first half.
Bluiett led the Musketeers with 26 points in the first half after hitting going 8-of-8 from the floor in the first half, including hitting six shots from outside.
Xavier hit 54 percent from the floor, including hitting 10-of-15 from three.
The Bearcats owned a slight advantage on the boards overall, 17-15, but turned seven offensive boards to outscore Xavier 11-0 on second chance points.
Bluiett continued the second period where he left off, hitting a three to put the Musketeers up nine, 47-36, the largest XU lead of the game.
The Bearcats responded with a 15-2 run, taking the lead with just over 10 minutes remaining.
UC pushed the lead out to as many as nine. The Bearcats battled back by grabbing 12 offensive boards for 19 second-chance points in the second half.
Xavier cut the lead down to one with just over three minutes remaining, but UC hit a pair of three's and four from the free throw line to push the lead back out to nine before a Bluiett free throw, his 40th point, set the final margin at 86-78.
Bluiett scored a team-high 13 in the second half.
UC out-rebounded the Musketeers 25-18 overall in the second half.
The Musketeers return to action on Sunday, January 29 at 6:00 p.m. when Xavier faces off with St. John's in New York. Tip off with the Red Storm is set for 6:00 p.m. on FS1, following the women's game between Xavier and St. John's scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Both games of the double-header will be held at Madison Square Garden.
Xavier returns home to host Seton Hall on Wednesday, February 1 at 9:00 p.m. on FS1.
